1. Mechanical properties
X70 steel grade is significantly better than X52 in mechanical properties. The yield strength of X52 is between 360MPa and 530MPa (about 52000 psi), while the minimum yield strength of X70 is 70,000 psi (485 MPa), ranging from 70,000 to 90,000 psi (485 to 620 MPa), which makes it more resistant to plastic deformation and has stronger bearing capacity, suitable for high pressure and high load scenarios. The tensile strength of X52 is between 460MPa and 760MPa, while that of X70 is between 90,000 and 110,000 psi (620 to 760 MPa). The high tensile strength allows the X70 pipe wall to be thinner, reducing weight and cost. In terms of impact toughness, X70 has excellent low-temperature performance due to optimized composition and process, which can reduce the risk of brittle fracture, while X52 is relatively weak.
2. Corrosion resistance and durability
X70 has higher corrosion resistance, its alloy elements are controlled, it has strong resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC), and has good resistance to external corrosion such as pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Through alloy selection and surface treatment process, it can extend life and reduce maintenance. X52 is not as corrosion resistant as X70. X70's high strength makes the pipe wall thin, reducing the risk of deformation during transportation and installation, and its impact toughness reduces the impact of accidental impact, and it has strong durability; X52 has a thicker pipe wall, poor resistance to deformation and impact, and weaker durability.
3. Weldability and manufacturing considerations
X70 has excellent weldability, but compared with low-grade pipes such as X52, welding X70 requires additional precautions and special procedures, such as controlling heat input, preheating and post-weld heat treatment to ensure the quality and mechanical properties of the heat-affected zone. When handling X70, manufacturers must follow strict guidelines and qualified procedures, and use advanced welding and non-destructive testing technologies to ensure quality. X52 welding is relatively simple, with loose process requirements, and the complexity of the manufacturing process and the strictness of quality control are relatively low.
IV. Application versatility and cost-effectiveness
X70 is widely used in various fields of the oil and gas industry, especially long-distance transportation of high-pressure, acidic, and corrosive fluids, as well as harsh environments such as deep water, the Arctic, and seismic zones. X52 is mainly used in oil drilling, oil and gas transportation, and refineries, and its adaptability to extreme environments is not as good as X70. In terms of cost-effectiveness, the initial purchase cost of X70 is high, but in the long run, its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance can reduce maintenance costs, extend life, and reduce downtime, and its thin-wall design saves material and transportation costs; X52 has a low initial cost, but the subsequent maintenance and replacement costs may be high, and the overall cost-effectiveness is not as good as X70.
