Austenitic stainless steel corrosion resistance

Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic and has high toughness and plasticity, but low strength. It is impossible to strengthen it through phase change. It can only be strengthened through cold working. If S, Ca, Se, Te and other elements are added, it has good machinability. Therefore, it is widely used in industry, furniture decoration industry and food and medical industry.

Austenitic stainless steel is non-magnetic, has high toughness and ductility in a wide temperature range, is easy to cold-process such as rolling and pressing, and can resist corrosion from oxidizing media. It is widely used in various pressure-bearing components of pressure vessels. Because austenitic stainless steel has a face-centered cubic structure, does not undergo phase change, and is easy to weld, austenitic stainless steel generally has no cold brittle transition temperature, so it is often used as low-temperature steel.
18-8 series solid solution stainless steel has good corrosion resistance in oxidizing acids and media such as atmosphere, water, and steam. Low carbon or containing stabilizing elements Ti or Nb has good resistance to intergranular corrosion, and Mo-containing stainless steel has good pitting resistance. Elements such as Mo and Cu can also resist corrosion from non-oxidizing acids such as dilute sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid and organic acids such as formic acid and acetic acid. However, it has poor pitting resistance and is prone to stress corrosion cracking in halide solutions. Creep and sensitization will occur when used for a long time at temperatures above 500℃-600℃.
