Manufacturing requirements
Chemical composition control
PSL1: The chemical composition requirements are relatively basic. There are basic content range restrictions for major elements such as carbon (C) and manganese (Mn) to ensure the basic performance of the pipe. For example, the carbon content generally does not exceed a certain proportion to ensure that the pipe has suitable strength and welding performance.
PSL2: The chemical composition control is more stringent. In addition to the strict control of conventional elements, the restrictions on some trace elements (such as harmful elements such as sulfur and phosphorus) are more stringent. Lower sulfur and phosphorus content helps to improve the corrosion resistance and toughness of the pipe, and the addition range of some alloying elements (such as niobium, vanadium, titanium, etc.) may be specified to refine the grain and enhance the performance of the pipe.
Production process control
PSL1: The quality control of the production process is relatively loose. In the parameter control of rolling, welding and other processes, the allowed fluctuation range is slightly larger. For example, in the welding process, the accuracy requirements for parameters such as welding speed and current are not as high as PSL2.
PSL2: Requires more stringent production process monitoring. In the forming and welding of pipes, various process parameters need to be precisely controlled. For example, in the production of straight seam welded pipes, there are more refined requirements for the forming quality and welding parameters of the weld, including the shape of the weld, the excess height, the performance of the heat-affected zone, etc., which are strictly regulated to ensure the consistency and high performance of the pipe quality.
2. Performance requirements
Mechanical properties
PSL1: Mechanical properties meet basic industry standards. Indicators such as yield strength and tensile strength meet the general requirements of API 5L X52, and can withstand certain pressure and tension, but may be slightly insufficient in some high-performance demand scenarios. For example, the yield strength is guaranteed to be within the specified range to ensure the safety of the pipe under normal working pressure.
PSL2: Has better mechanical properties. Indicators such as yield strength and tensile strength may be higher or have better toughness at the same strength. This enables it to better resist internal pressure and external loads in high-pressure and high-stress working environments, such as long-distance, large-diameter oil and gas transmission pipelines, and reduce the risk of pipe deformation and damage.
Corrosion resistance
PSL1: Has basic corrosion resistance and can cope with general oil and gas media and environmental conditions. However, for some complex environments containing more corrosive components (such as hydrogen sulfide, etc.), its corrosion resistance may be limited.
PSL2: Better corrosion resistance. Through stricter chemical composition control and production process, it can maintain good performance in harsh environments containing corrosive media, effectively extend the service life of the pipe, and reduce the cost of repair and replacement due to corrosion.
3. Inspection and testing requirements
Non-destructive testing
PSL1: The requirements for non-destructive testing are relatively low. For example, for ultrasonic testing or radiographic testing of welds, the detection ratio may be low and the allowable defect size range is relatively wide. This is because its application scenario does not require extremely high internal quality of the pipe.
PSL2: More stringent non-destructive testing is required. Usually a higher detection ratio is required, such as 100% ultrasonic testing of welds and a certain proportion of radiographic testing, and there are stricter restrictions on the allowable defect size and type to ensure that there are no defects inside the pipe that may affect the safety of use.
Application areas
PSL1: Applicable to general occasions where the performance requirements of pipes are not particularly high. For example, it is used in some oil and gas field internal gathering and transportation pipelines with low pressure and short distance, or in industrial pipeline systems in non-critical parts with relatively loose requirements on pipeline quality.
PSL2: Mainly used in critical occasions with high requirements on pipe quality and performance. For example, long-distance, large-diameter, high-pressure oil and gas transmission trunk lines, deep-sea oil and gas production pipelines, etc., these places have extremely high requirements on the strength, corrosion resistance and safety of pipes. PSL2 pipes can better meet these requirements.
