The lower limit for manganese (Mn) in ASTM A106 is about 0.30% Mn, but you'll typically see at least twice that amount (about 0.60% Mn). For hot-rolled products, Mn contents of 0.80% to 1.20% are more common, as increased alloy content is required to achieve the standard's strength requirements. Because of these considerations, the product typically has a Mn/C ratio of 3 to 5, depending on the production method. Therefore, ASME B31.3 limits low-temperature applications of SA106 Class B products to above -20F (-29C).
