A53 Carbon Steel Pipe Steel used to operate welded pipe shall be made using one or more of the following processes: open hearth, electric furnace, or basic oxygen. Welds of Class A53 resistance welded pipe shall be heat treated after welding to a minimum temperature of 100o°F (540°F) to avoid residual untempered martensite. When pipes expand due to cold, the expansion shall not exceed 1.5% of the pipe's specified outer diameter.
A53 welded pipe is suitable for mechanical and pressure applications, as well as general purpose use in steam, water, natural gas and air piping.
