ASTM A519 Grade 1045 Seamless Mechanical Tubing: Composition, Properties and Uses

A519 1045 Round Mechanical Tube: An Overview

ASTM A519 Grade 1045 is a medium-carbon seamless steel tube with a carbon content of 0.43–0.50% and a manganese content of 0.60–0.90%. It is widely used in mechanical structural parts, tool manufacturing and automobile manufacturing, where strength, wear resistance and machinability must be balanced. The grade is supplied as round hot-processed or cold-drawn mechanical tubing under the ASTM A519 specification.

Chemical Composition

Element Grade 1045 (%)
Carbon (C) 0.43–0.50
Manganese (Mn) 0.60–0.90
Phosphorus (P), max 0.040
Sulfur (S), max 0.050

Mechanical Properties

Hot-processed 1045 mechanical tubing typically exhibits a minimum tensile strength of 517 MPa (75 ksi) with a minimum elongation of 15%. The material can be further strengthened by heat treatment processes such as normalizing, quenching and tempering, which improve hardness and wear resistance for demanding service. After proper heat treatment, the tube offers good wear resistance, tensile resistance and bending resistance in service.

Delivery Conditions and Straightness

Delivery conditions: BK, BKW, BK+S, GBK and NBK

Straightness: 0.5 mm/m max for tubes below 3 m; 0.8 mm/m max for tubes between 3 and 6 m; 1.2 mm/m for tubes above 6 m

Finishing technology: honed and SRB (skived and roller burnished)

Honed Seamless Tube Applications

A519 1045 honed seamless steel tube is the standard cylinder barrel material for hydraulic systems. Typical applications include the hydraulic cylinders of heavy machinery, cranes, excavators and forklifts, where bore accuracy, surface finish and pressure tightness are essential for reliable operation.

Quality Control

Seamless 1045 tubes are verified through tensile testing, hardness testing, dimensional checks and surface inspection. Honed tubes receive additional bore diameter and surface roughness verification to meet hydraulic cylinder manufacturer requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 1045 designation mean?

It refers to a medium-carbon steel with a nominal carbon content of 0.45% (range 0.43–0.50%), giving it higher strength than low-carbon grades such as 1018/1020.

What is the difference between hot-rolled and cold-drawn 1045 tube?

Hot-processed tube is supplied as-formed or heat-treated, while cold-drawn tube has tighter dimensional tolerances, better surface finish and improved mechanical properties.

What is a honed tube?

A honed tube has its bore machined and finished by honing to achieve precise internal diameter tolerance and low surface roughness, ready for hydraulic cylinder assembly.

Can 1045 steel be welded?

It can be welded, but as a medium-carbon steel it requires preheat and post-weld heat treatment to avoid hardening and cracking in the heat-affected zone.

What do delivery conditions like BK and NBK mean?

They are European shorthand for processing states: BK is cold drawn/hard, BKW is cold drawn/soft, BK+S is cold drawn and stress relieved, GBK is annealed and NBK is normalized.

Which industries use A519 1045 tube?

Hydraulic cylinder manufacturing, machine building, tooling, automotive components and general mechanical engineering.
