API 5CT Grade L80 Casing and Tubing
API 5CT is the authoritative standard for casing and tubing in the oil and gas industry, characterized by high strength, corrosion resistance and standardized manufacturing. Grade L80, a typical material under this standard, is specifically designed for oil and gas wells containing corrosive media such as CO2 and Cl-, and is widely used in deep well drilling, shale gas development and offshore platform applications.
Why L80 for Corrosive Wells
L80 is a controlled-hardness, restricted-yield grade. Its maximum hardness is limited to 23 HRC, which prevents sulfide stress cracking in sour environments, while the chemistry variants of the L80 family address sweet corrosion as well. This combination of strength and corrosion resistance makes L80 a default choice for production casing and tubing where CO2 and chloride-bearing formation fluids are present.
Length Ranges
| Product | R1 | R2 | R3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casing | 4.88–7.62 m | 7.62–10.36 m | 10.36–14.63 m |
| Tubing | 6.10–7.32 m | 8.53–9.75 m | 11.58–12.80 m |
Connections
Standard connections for casing are LTC (long round thread), STC (short round thread) and BTC (buttress thread); tubing is typically supplied with NUE (non-upset external) or EUE (external upset end) connections, or to customer-specific requirements. Premium connections may be specified for gas-tight service in high-pressure wells.
Manufacturing and Quality Control
L80 casing and tubing are manufactured as seamless or ERW products under API 5CT, and may also be supplied to SY/T 6194, BS EN ISO 11960, NF M87-207, JIS G3439 and IS 4270. Verification includes chemical analysis, tensile and hardness testing, hydrostatic testing, non-destructive examination and dimensional inspection, with full traceability documented in the mill test certificate.
Typical Applications
Production casing and tubing in CO2-bearing reservoirs
Deep well drilling strings with high collapse and burst loads
Shale gas horizontal wells
Offshore platform completion strings
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between L80-1 and L80-13Cr?
L80-1 is carbon steel optimized for H2S resistance; L80-13Cr is a martensitic stainless grade for high-CO2, high-chloride environments.
Is L80 suitable for sour service?
Yes, the L80-1 variant with a 23 HRC maximum hardness is widely accepted for sour service per NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.
What does R1, R2 or R3 length range mean?
These are API 5CT length categories: R1 is the shortest range and R3 the longest, affecting joint count and running economics.
Which connection should be selected for gas-tight wells?
For gas-tight integrity, premium connections with metal-to-metal seals are recommended; BTC is the standard high-tensile option among API connections.
Can L80 be welded?
Welding of OCTG in service is generally avoided; when required, controlled procedures with preheat and PWHT must be applied.
What test reports accompany L80 products?
Mill test certificates covering chemical composition, mechanical properties, hydrostatic results and NDT findings, in line with EN 10204 requirements.
