Wall Thickness Calculation Formula
Straight sections of pipe should have a nominal wall thickness that satisfies the following formula.
W = π × (D^2 - (D - 2t)^2) × ρ × L / 4
W = Pipe weight (kg or lb)
D = Outside diameter of pipe (mm or inches)
t = Wall thickness of pipe (mm or inches)
ρ = Density of pipe material (kg/m^3 or lb/in^3)
L = Length of pipe (meters or inches)
For carbon steel pipe, the typical density (ρ) is approximately 7,850 kg/m^3 (0.284 lb/in^3).
Weight Calculation
The formula for calculating the weight of bare API 5L PSL1 pipe (no coating or lining) is as follows:
Weight (kg/m) = π × (Outside Diameter^2 - Inside Diameter^2) × Weight per unit length. Where π is the ratio of pi, OD and ID represent the outer and inner diameters of the steel pipe, respectively.
If the pipe has additional coatings or linings, their weight contribution should be added to the bare pipe weight. This is usually done by calculating the volume of the coating or lining material and multiplying it by the corresponding material density.
Pressure Rating and Design Factors
The pressure rating of API 5L PSL1 pipe is directly related to its wall thickness, outside diameter and the specified minimum yield strength (SMYS) of the material. The API 5L standard provides formulas for calculating the internal pressure rating based on the pipe size and material properties.
The internal pressure rating is calculated as follows:
P = (2 × S × F × t) / (D - t × Y)
