What is the difference between API 5L Grade B and X52

What is the difference between API 5L Grade B and X52 pipeline

I. Strength grade and chemical composition
Yield strength:
GR.B: Yield strength ≥245 MPa (corresponding to L245 steel grade), tensile strength ≥415 MPa, belonging to low strength pipeline steel.
X52: Yield strength ≥ 360 MPa (corresponding to L360 steel grade), tensile strength 460~760 MPa, belonging to medium-high strength steel.
Alloy design:
GR.B: Low carbon (C ≤ 0.26%), low sulphur and phosphorus (S ≤ 0.005%), containing traces of niobium (Nb) or vanadium (V), focusing on weldability and economy.
X52: Micro-alloyed design (containing Nb, V, etc.), carbon equivalent (CE ≤ 0.43%), enhanced grain refinement and precipitation phase, taking into account the strength and toughness.
Second, the applicable scene and environmental adaptability
Application field:
GR.B: mostly used in low-pressure oil and gas transmission, building structural steel pipe and other non-high-pressure scenarios, suitable for ordinary corrosive environments.
X52: It is suitable for high-pressure oil and gas pipelines (such as long-distance pipelines), low-temperature environments (-20℃ impact work ≥40J) and sulfur-containing/acidic medium environments.
Corrosion resistance:
X52: Subject to HIC (hydrogen-induced cracking) and SSC (sulphide stress corrosion) tests (NACE standard), with corrosion resistance better than GR.B
Third, the manufacturing process and standards
Manufacturing process:
GR.B: mostly hot rolling or cold drawing process, lower cost, in line with API 5L PSL1 standard.
X52: need to control rolling and cold control (TMCP) or normalising treatment, to meet the PSL2 standard (more stringent chemical composition and non-destructive testing requirements).
International Standard Correspondence:
GR.B: Corresponding to China L245 (GB/T 9711), EN 10225 common grade.
X52: Corresponding to China L360, European standard EN 10225 L360, applicable to supercritical pressure pipeline.
IV. Economy and selection suggestions
GR.B: Low cost, suitable for projects with limited budget and mild working conditions (e.g. city gas medium and low pressure pipeline network).
X52: Higher price, but excellent comprehensive performance, recommended for long-distance gas pipelines in high-pressure, low-temperature or corrosive environments.
Summary: GR.B focuses on economy and basic performance, while X52 improves strength and corrosion resistance through alloy optimisation. Both are suitable for oil and gas transmission scenarios with different pressure ratings and environmental requirements.
