How does PSL impact the mechanical properties of API 5L L360 pipes?

Strength:
PSL1: The minimum yield strength requirement of API 5L L360 PSL1 pipeline is 360MPa, and there are corresponding standards for indicators such as tensile strength, but relatively speaking, its strength is at a level that basically meets the needs of conventional transportation. For example, in some ordinary oil and natural gas land transportation pipelines, PSL1 L360 pipelines can withstand a certain pressure to ensure the normal transportation of oil and gas.
PSL2: API 5L L360 pipelines of PSL2 grade have higher strength requirements. Due to the use of more stringent production processes and quality control, such as more precise control of chemical composition, more optimized rolling or heat treatment, etc., the grain of the pipeline is finer and the structure is more uniform, thereby improving the strength. For example, in some high-pressure, long-distance oil and gas transportation projects, PSL2's L360 pipeline can better withstand higher pressures and reduce the risk of deformation or rupture of pipelines due to insufficient strength.
Toughness:
PSL1: In general, the toughness of API 5L L360 PSL1 pipelines can meet the use requirements under normal conditions. Under normal temperature and pressure conditions, it has a certain impact resistance and can withstand a certain degree of external force impact without brittle fracture. For example, for pipelines laid in some areas with mild climate conditions and relatively stable geological environments, the toughness of PSL1 can meet their operating requirements.
PSL2: PSL2's API 5L L360 pipeline has better performance in toughness. Through stricter production control and testing, it can maintain good toughness in a wider temperature range, especially in low temperature environments, with better anti-brittle fracture performance. This is crucial for some pipelines used in cold areas or marine environments under low temperature conditions. It can effectively prevent the pipeline from rupturing under low temperature impact and ensure the safe and stable operation of the pipeline system.
Fatigue resistance:
PSL1: API 5L L360 PSL1 pipelines have certain fatigue resistance under general transportation conditions. Under normal pressure fluctuations, fluid impact and other conditions, it can withstand a certain number of cyclic loads without fatigue damage. However, for some pipeline systems with frequent and large fluctuations in transportation pressure and flow, the fatigue resistance of PSL1 may gradually decrease, affecting the service life of the pipeline.
PSL2: PSL2 grade pipelines have significantly improved fatigue resistance due to their superior materials and production processes. It can better cope with complex and changeable transportation conditions, withstand more pressure and flow cycle changes, reduce cracks and damage caused by fatigue, and extend the service life of the pipeline. For example, in some large oil and gas field gathering and transportation systems, PSL2's L360 pipeline can operate stably under long-term complex conditions, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
