How does the performance of X52 pipe change in low temperature environment?

The performance of API 5L X52 pipe in low temperature environment is as follows:
Strength change: As the temperature decreases, the strength of X52 pipe will increase, and its yield strength and tensile strength may increase. This is because low temperature weakens the thermal motion of atoms inside the material and increases the resistance to dislocation motion, making it more difficult for the material to undergo plastic deformation, which is manifested as an increase in strength on a macro scale. However, this increase in strength will also reduce its toughness relatively, so it is necessary to consider the balance between strength and toughness when using it at low temperatures.
Toughness performance: Generally, the toughness of API 5L X52 pipe will decrease in low temperature environment. If it is subjected to impact loads or stress concentration at low temperatures, the pipe is more likely to suffer brittle fracture. In order to improve its low-temperature toughness, the chemical composition can be controlled during the production process, such as reducing the carbon content, adding appropriate amounts of alloying elements (such as nickel, vanadium, etc.), and using appropriate heat treatment processes (such as normalizing, tempering, etc.) to refine the grains, improve the toughness of the material, and reduce the risk of low-temperature brittle fracture.
Impact resistance: The impact resistance of X52 pipes at low temperatures is relatively poor, and the impact absorption energy will decrease as the temperature decreases. When the temperature drops to a certain critical value, the impact toughness of the pipe will drop sharply. This temperature is called the tough-brittle transition temperature. When used in an environment below the tough-brittle transition temperature, the pipe is more sensitive to impact loads, and even a small impact force may cause it to break. Therefore, for X52 pipes used in low-temperature environments, it is necessary to ensure that their use temperature is higher than the tough-brittle transition temperature, or to improve their low-temperature impact resistance through special processing and quality control.
Welding performance changes: Low-temperature environments will have a certain impact on the welding performance of X52 pipes. During the welding process, due to the low temperature, the cooling rate of the steel is accelerated, which is prone to defects such as welding cracks and pores. In addition, low temperature will also affect the performance of welding materials and the structure and performance of welded joints, reducing the strength and toughness of welded joints. In order to ensure the welding quality, when welding X52 pipes in a low temperature environment, it is necessary to take appropriate preheating measures, select appropriate welding materials and welding processes, and strictly control welding parameters to reduce the occurrence of welding defects and improve the performance of welded joints.
