What is a J55 pipe

J55 steel pipe is a specialized pipe material for oil drilling and oil and gas transportation. It belongs to the API standard casing equipment, and the main steel grade is J-55. The product material includes DZ series geological drilling steel, manufactured by hot rolling or cold drawing processes, and complies with SY/T6194-96 and API SPEC 5CT standards. According to the thread type, it is divided into short thread and long thread casing, and the fixed length production supports the length range from R-1 (4.88-7.62m) to R-3 (10.36m and above).

Performance Characteristics

Mechanical Properties

Yield Strength: 379-552 MPa, capable of withstanding formation pressure and tensile and compressive stresses during drilling.

Tensile Strength: ≥517 MPa, meeting the mechanical requirements for tripping and running drill strings in conventional drilling equipment.

Elongation: Within a gauge length of 50.8 mm, the minimum elongation is higher than that of K55 steel grade, suitable for bending or tensile processing scenarios requiring a certain degree of deformation capacity.

Chemical Composition Optimization

Phosphorus (P) ≤0.030%, Sulfur (S) ≤0.030%: Strictly limiting the content of harmful elements to reduce the impact of inclusions on toughness.

Other Elements: The addition of alloying elements (such as Cr, Mo) is not mandatory; a carbon-manganese (C-Mn) system is used to achieve a balance of basic properties.

Impact Resistance

In the CVN Charpy impact test, the impact energy is comparable to that of K55 steel grade, capable of withstanding impact loads during drilling and reducing the risk of brittle fracture.

Economic Efficiency and Versatility

Cost Advantage: As a basic steel grade in the API 5CT standard, J55 is cheaper than high-strength steel grades such as L80 and P110, making it suitable for large-scale applications.

Wide Specification Coverage: Outer diameter range 114.3-508mm, wall thickness 5.21-16.13mm, supports various thread types such as STC (short round thread), LTC (long round thread), and BTC (trapezoidal thread).

Strict Quality Inspection

Non-destructive Testing: Surface and internal defects are detected using ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing to ensure the integrity of the casing.

Hydrostatic Pressure Test: Verifies sealing performance to prevent leakage risks.

Flattening Test: Tests plastic deformation capacity to ensure the casing's adaptability in complex formations.

Applications

API 5CT J55 seamless casing is a widely used casing type in the oil and gas industry. Its core applications include:

Shallow and Medium-Deep Well Support

Suitable for shallow oil and gas wells with moderate formation pressure. Through cementing processes, it forms a stable wellbore structure, preventing collapse.

Non-Corrosive Environments

In formations without corrosive gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) or carbon dioxide (CO₂), J55 casing is the preferred choice due to its cost advantage.

Comparison: In acidic environments (such as those containing H₂S), it is necessary to upgrade to corrosion-resistant steel grades such as L80 or C90.

Water Wells and Geological Exploration

Used in water well drilling to support the wellbore and isolate different aquifers; in geological exploration, it serves as temporary casing to protect drilling equipment.

Low-Cost Projects

In budget-sensitive projects, J55 is widely used for surface and technical casing due to its affordability and ample supply.
