In the oil and gas industry, EUE stands for External Upset End. It refers to a specific type of threaded connection used primarily on tubing (the pipes used to bring oil or gas out of a well).
In Stock: 2-3/8" to 4-1/2" EUE Tubing in J55, L80, and P110. Check Availability Now.
What does "External Upset" mean?
In a standard pipe, cutting threads into the end reduces the thickness of the metal, making the joint the weakest part of the pipe.
To prevent this, manufacturers perform an "upset"-a forging process that makes the ends of the pipe thicker than the main body. An External Upset means the extra thickness is added to the outside of the pipe.
Why is it used?
Strength: Because the ends are thickened before the threads are cut, the wall thickness under the threads is equal to or greater than the rest of the pipe. This ensures the connection is as strong as the pipe body itself.
High Pressure/Tension: EUE threads are designed for high-pressure environments and can handle the heavy weight of a long "string" of tubing hanging deep in a well.
Durability: They are designed to be "made up" (screwed together) and "broken out" (unscrewed) multiple times without damaging the seal.
Thread Technical Characteristics
EUE threads belong to the API Round Thread family.
| Parameter | Specification | Notes |
| Thread Profile | API Round Thread | Rounded crests and roots |
| Threads Per Inch (TPI) | 10 TPI / 8 TPI | 1.050"-1.900" is 10rd; 2-3/8" and above is 8rd |
| Taper | 1:16 (0.0625 mm/mm) | Equivalent to 0.75 inches per foot (3/4" TPF) |
| Thread Height | 1.810 mm (for 8rd) | Theoretical depth of the thread |
| Sealing Method | Interference Fit + Thread Compound | Seal is formed by flank-to-flank contact |

Common Steel Grades & Mechanical Properties
Steel grades are selected based on well depth, pressure, and the presence of corrosive gases (H2S/CO2).
| Grade | Yield Strength (psi) | Color Coding (Bands) | Application Environment |
| J55 | 55,000 - 80,000 | One Bright Green band | Shallow to medium depth, low-stress wells |
| N80-1/Q | 80,000 - 110,000 | One Red band | Deeper wells, higher strength requirements |
| L80 | 80,000 - 95,000 | One Red + One Brown | Sour Service (H2S resistant) |
| P110 | 110,000 - 140,000 | One White band | Deep, high-pressure, and high-tension wells |
EUE vs. NUE
You will often see EUE compared to NUE (Non-Upset End):
EUE: Thickened ends, much stronger, the industry standard for most production tubing.
NUE: The ends are the same thickness as the pipe body. These are used in lower-stress environments where cost-saving is a priority or where space is extremely tight.

FAQ
What is the difference between EUE and EUT threads?
The difference is primarily in terminology, not in the physical thread design. In the oil and gas industry, they are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle distinction in what they describe:
| Term | Stands For | Focus |
| EUE | External Upset End | The Thread and connection style. |
| EUT | External Upset Tubing | The Whole Pipe as a product. |
What are the different types of pipe threads called?
Pipe threads are generally divided into three main categories depending on their use (Plumbing vs. Oil & Gas).
| Type | Name | Best For |
| EUE | External Upset | Production Tubing (Strongest) |
| NUE | Non-Upset | Low-pressure/Utility Tubing |
| BTC | Buttress | Heavy Casing (High tension) |
| NPT | National Pipe Taper | Standard USA Plumbing |
| Premium | VAM/Tenaris | Extreme HPHT / Gas Wells |
What are the specs of 2 7 8 EUE tubing?
2-7/8 "EUE is a thickened tubing with an outer diameter of 73.03mm and 8 teeth per inch. If your tool needs to pass through it, the diameter cannot exceed 2.347 inches (59.61mm).
