What is API 5CT L80 Casing And tubing Pipe?
API 5CT L80 Casing and Tubing Pipe refers to oilfield casing and tubing products that comply with the American Petroleum Institute (API) specification API Spec 5CT. These products are primarily used in oil and gas wells to support well walls and convey fluids, and are particularly suitable for corrosive environments containing H₂S (hydrogen sulfide) or CO₂.L80 belongs to steel grades group of corrosion-resistant casing. API 5CT L80 oilfield casing pipe includes L80-1, L80-9Cr, and L80-13Cr. L80-1 is used in the H2S environment, while L80-9Cr and L80-13Cr are used in the CO2 environment. In the corrosive environment in which carbon dioxide predominates, Super 13Cr has a higher corrosion resistance than L80-13Cr. Request a Professional Solution for API 5CT L80 Casing Today.

Heat treatment methods for L80 pipes
All API 5CT L80 grades (L80-1, L80 9Cr, L80 13Cr) adopt Quenched + Tempered (Q&T) heat treatment.Normalizing or annealing is not allowed. Full body quenched and tempered to limit hardness ≤23HRC and ensure good SSC resistance for sour service.
1.Overall heating: Uniformly heats the entire seamless tube to the austenitizing temperature.
2.Quenching: High-pressure water quenching/spray quenching for rapid cooling to obtain a high-strength martensitic structure.
3.Tempering: Constant high-temperature tempering reduces hardness, releases internal stress, and improves toughness, strictly controlling the upper limit of hardness to ≤23 HRC.
4.Straightening: Precision hot straightening after heat treatment to ensure straightness meets API 5CT standards.
5.Mechanical property testing: Tensile, impact, and hardness tests are performed on each batch to ensure a yield strength of 552–655 MPa.
L80 casing pipe connection types
API 5CT L80 casing connection is one of the most critical interface specifications of API 5CT casing, which directly determines the sealing performance, pressure bearing capacity and applicable well conditions.API 5CT L80 casing pipe connection types include:
STC (Short Round Thread):generally used for sealing. Mostly used in shallow wells, low-pressure applications, and surface casing. Easy to install and disassemble, low cost.
LTC (Long Round Thread):superior sealing and tensile strength compared to STC.Suitable for medium-deep wells and conventional oil and gas wells.L80 General-purpose mainstream thread type.
BTC (Buttress Thread):High load-bearing capacity, resistant to compression and high tensile strength; good sealing performance, not easy to slip off; L80 is the first choice for acidic wells and deep wells, and is used in the largest quantities.
XC (Extreme Line):No external couplings required; direct internal and external thread connection at the pipe ends.Small outer diameter, saving wellbore space.Suitable for compact wellbore structures, deep wells, and special working conditions.
We also supply Premium special connections and Plain End for welding and custom fabrication.BTC is the most popular type for deep sour service wells.
L80 tubing pipe connection types
NUE (Non‑Upset Tubing):Pipe end: No thickening, directly machined tapered thread.Round thread, taper 1:16.Low cost, small outer diameter; slightly lower tensile strength.Commonly used in Shallow wells, medium-deep wells, conventional working conditions.
EUE(External Upset Tubing):End upsetting (thickening) followed by threading.Same as NU, round thread 1:16.Higher tensile and compressive strength, better sealing; larger coupling outer diameter.Commonly used in medium-deep wells, high-pressure wells, and wells requiring higher strength.
IJ(Integral Joint):One end has an external thread (PIN), and the other end has an internal thread (BOX). They can be directly screwed together without a coupling. This design features a smaller outer diameter, larger annular clearance, and fewer leakage points. Commonly used in small-bore wells, horizontal wells, and high-fatigue/corrosion wells.

FAQ
1.How is the pipe packed for ocean shipping?
① Plastic caps on both ends + thread protectors
② Hexagonal bundling with anti-slip steel straps
③ Seaworthy wooden crates / steel racks
④ Each pipe marked: heat number, grade, size, API monogram, Mfg date
2.What standard does API 5CT L80 follow?
It follows API Spec 5CT (11th Edition, Dec 2023) + API 5B (threads) + API 5L (related). For sour service, it also complies with NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156. For EU market: CE + PED 2014/68/E
3.L80 vs N80 - which one should I choose?
Both have the same yield strength (80,000 psi). N80 has no Cr, cheaper, for sweet wells. L80-1 has stricter chemistry control and is preferred when PSL-2/3 or NACE compliance is required. N80 is being phased out in many specs.
