Lower limit value of tensile strength: according to API 5L GRB standard, the tensile strength needs to be ≥415 MPa to meet the strength requirements of oil and gas transmission pipelines.
Yield strength: the basic standard is ≥240 MPa, and some products can be upgraded to ≥280 MPa through heat treatment process.
Process-specific performance enhancement.
Some producers can extend the tensile strength range to 415~655 MPa by optimising the hot rolling or heat treatment process. For example, the tensile strength of L245/Gr B pipeline steel produced by Maoyang Iron & Steel covers 415~655 MPa.
The tensile strength of some alloy structural pipes (e.g. 76mm OD pipe with 11mm wall thickness) can reach 480~630 MPa.
II. Strength differences in different scenarios
Chemical composition and process influence
Carbon content of ≤ 0.28%, manganese content of 1.20% of the steel can ensure stable tensile strength ≥ 415 MPa, while taking into account the weldability and corrosion resistance.
Cold drawing, hot expansion and other processing methods may improve the local strength, but need to comply with TSG D7002 pressure piping components type test rules.
International Standard Comparison
The tensile strength requirement of ASTM A106 GRB/A53 GRB is the same as API 5L GRB (≥415 MPa).
Some European standards (such as EN) of similar pipelines may require a higher strength range, need to be combined with specific project requirements to choose.

In oil and gas transmission projects, API 5L GRB pipeline pipe is widely used in high-pressure, long-distance pipeline systems to ensure structural safety and durability due to its tensile strength ≥415 MPa.
