1. Areas of application
API 5L X52: Designed for long-distance transmission pipelines for oil and natural gas, emphasising pressure resistance, corrosion resistance and low-temperature toughness, and suitable for high-pressure environments.
ASTM A106: belongs to the boiler and high temperature pressure vessel steel pipe, mainly used in electric power, chemical industry and other high temperature and high pressure scenarios (such as steam piping), the material is required to have high temperature creep resistance.
2. Chemical composition
| element | API 5L X52(PSL1) | ASTM A106 B | Explanation of variance |
|---|---|---|---|
| C | ≤0.28%(seamless)或 ≤0.26%(welded) | 0.27–0.93% | A106 Higher carbon content for enhanced high-temperature strength |
| S | ≤0.030% | ≤0.035% | API 5L Tighter impurity control |
| P | ≤0.030% | ≤0.035% | API 5L Tighter impurity control |
3. Mechanical properties
| parametric | API 5L X52 | ASTM A106 B | Explanation of variance |
|---|---|---|---|
| yield strength | ≥360 MPa | ≥240 MPa | API 5L Higher strength for high pressure transport |
| tensile strength | ≥460 MPa | ≥415 MPa | API 5L Higher strength for high pressure transport |
| elongation | ≥19.4% | ≥30% | A106 Higher elongation and superior toughness |
4. Process requirements
Manufacturing process:
API 5L allows seamless and welded steel pipe (subject to weld performance requirements).
ASTM A106 is limited to seamless tubes only and has more stringent limits on grain size and hardness (e.g., grain size ≥ grade 5).
Heat Treatment:
API 5L X52 is normally normalised by the normalising process (N) or controlled rolling.
ASTM A106 requires normalising or normalising + tempering to ensure high temperature stability.
5. Standard systems
API 5L: belongs to the American Petroleum Institute (API), for oil and gas pipeline performance and safety specifications.
ASTM A106: belongs to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Standard, focusing on the material properties of high-temperature pressure equipment.
