What is API 5L Line Pipe
API 5L Line Pipe is a specialized pipe manufactured according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) 5L standard, primarily used for long-distance transportation of oil, gas, and water. Its types include seamless pipes and welded pipes, with end designs ranging from plain ends, threaded ends, to bell ends. Connection methods involve welding, coupling, and socketing.
Common materials span L245, L360, up to X70 steel grades, with outer diameters ranging from 60 to 630 mm and wall thickness specifications from 1.53 to 40 mm. Production employs micro-alloyed heat treatment processes, with high-grade products enhancing performance by adjusting carbon equivalents and optimizing heat treatment parameters. Annealing processes include full annealing, spheroidizing annealing, and stress-relief annealing to eliminate residual stresses and stabilize material structures. Tempering treatments reduce quench brittleness and improve mechanical properties. With advancements in welding technology, large-diameter welded pipes have become mainstream due to cost advantages, while seamless pipe applications remain relatively limited.
