What is API casing?
API casing refers to steel pipes used for oil and gas industry applications, specifically for providing structural support to oil wells during drilling and production operations. They are a critical component that helps prevent contamination and ensure the stability of the well.
What size is API casing?
Common sizes of casing include: 4½", 5", 5½", 6⅝", 7", 7⅝", 8⅝", 9⅝", 10¾", 11¾", 13⅜", 16", 18⅝", 20", etc. Common wall thickness series: such as 5.21 mm, 6.35 mm, 7.72 mm, 9.17 mm, 10.36 mm, etc.
What is casing used for?
Casing serves both aesthetic and functional purposes. It provides a finished look to the edges of windows, doors, posts, and beams, covering gaps and rough edges. In its steel tube form, casing is used to support and stabilize drilled holes, preventing collapse and contamination.
How does API casing work?
Casing is pipe usually larger in diameter and longer than drill pipe and is used to line the hole. Casing operations occur periodically throughout the drilling process starting with the surface casing, intermediate casing, and ending with production string which takes place during well completion.
What is the function of casing?
The main functions of production casing include protecting the borehole wall and sealing and separating oil and gas reservoirs in order to achieve safe oil and gas production and separate-zone testing, water injection, and stimulation.
