. Mechanical Properties Benchmarking
Yield strength: ≥448 MPa (X65M PSL2 grade)1 or ≥450 MPa (L450/X65Q);
Tensile strength: ≥535~760 MPa (X65Q seamless steel pipe);
Impact work: ≥48 J at -27℃ (X65M PSL2).
The above indicators show that API 5L X65 pipe has high strength and toughness, but not directly associated with the specific values of Brinell hardness (HBW) or Rockwell hardness (HRC).
2. Standard requirements for hardness
API 5L standard does not explicitly require the hardness value of X65 grade steel pipe, its performance is mainly controlled by chemical composition, yield strength and corrosion resistance and other parameters;
The hardness of similar materials (e.g. WPHY65) is usually ensured indirectly by the production process (e.g. controlled rolling and chilling) to meet the needs of resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC).
3. Limitations of hardness in application scenarios
In oil and gas transmission pipelines, the hardness of API 5L X65 pipe needs to meet the following conditions:
Avoid cracking during welding or cold bending process due to excessive hardness;
In acidic environments containing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), the risk of sulphide stress corrosion needs to be reduced by a low hardness (usually HRC ≤ 22).
To summarise
The hardness of API 5L X65 pipe is not explicitly limited in the standard, but its mechanical properties (e.g. tensile strength ≥ 535 MPa) and process control have ensured that the material meets the needs of high temperature, high pressure and corrosive environments. In practice, it is recommended to further test or refer to the hardness requirements of related fittings (e.g. WPHY65(HIC)) according to specific working conditions (e.g. acidic environment).
