API 5L X46 SAW Pipe Description
API 5L X46 belongs to the medium-grade pipeline steel, with a minimum yield strength of 46,000 psi (approximately 317 MPa), offering excellent toughness and weldability. The standard imposes clear requirements on chemical composition, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and non-destructive testing:
Chemical Composition: Carbon content is controlled below 0.12%, with manganese, silicon, and other elements added in proportion. Harmful elements like sulfur and phosphorus must be kept below 0.025% to ensure welding quality.
Mechanical Properties: In addition to yield strength, the tensile strength must reach 435-760 MPa, with Charpy impact energy at -20℃ not less than 40 J.
Manufacturing Process: High-frequency resistance welding (ERW) or submerged arc welding (SAWL) can be used, and welds must pass ultrasonic or X-ray testing.

Applications
Onshore Pipelines: For example, sections of the Central Asia Gas Pipeline C line use X46M steel pipes with a working pressure of 10 MPa and a pipe diameter of 1016 mm.
Offshore Platforms: A subsea pipeline project in Bohai Oilfield employs X46M SAWL steel pipes, with a designed lifespan of 30 years when combined with cathodic protection.
Urban Networks: Suited for high-pressure gas transmission, X46M steel pipes offer a weight reduction of over 15% compared to traditional L245 steel pipes, reducing construction costs.
