How To Identify The Difference Between Stainless Steel And Aluminum Alloy?

1. Different weights in the same volume.

Their density varies greatly. Aluminum is much less dense than stainless steel, so materials made from it are lightweight. Aluminum is typically three or more times lighter than stainless steel. So if the item looks the same as regular steel, the brightness must be stainless steel.

2. Different costs

Aluminum is generally cheaper than stainless steel because it doesn't require as much processing. Stainless steel, on the other hand, is expensive due to lengthy refining processes and alloying.

3. Different mechanical properties.

Aluminum is a better conductor of heat than stainless steel, making it used in car radiators and air conditioning units. Aluminum is a very good power source compared to stainless steel. In terms of strength, stainless steel is stronger than aluminum.

4. Different applications

Due to its neutral chemical composition, stainless steel is less reactive to food. 304 stainless steel is better suited for cooking applications such as counter tops and food storage containers. But aluminum can affect color and taste, as the coating can mix in food and cause any illness.

How do you differentiate it from aluminum alloy?

1.Magnet test

Start by hitting the metal with a magnet. If it sticks to items, it won't be aluminum, but will most likely be steel or a special type of stainless steel called grade 400 stainless steel. This should be your first step in identifying stainless steel from aluminum.

2. Test

Observe the surface of the object. Stainless steel is more susceptible to corrosion than aluminum. Stainless steel is specifically made to resist staining and corrosion (rust), while aluminum will tend to shade if exposed to moisture or chemicals for an extended period of time.

3.Spark test

Items made of aluminum will not leak sparks when passed through a grinder. If it is non-magnetic and emits sparks, the product is most likely made from 300 series grade stainless steel.
