HWDP is a thick-walled pipe that resembles a standard drill pipe but has a much higher weight per foot. It serves as a "buffer" to prevent the fatigue and breakage that can occur at the transition zone where the flexibility of the drill pipe meets the extreme rigidity of the drill collars. Its most recognizable feature is the Center Wear Pad (or integral middle swell), which protects the pipe body from abrasion and adds stiffness.

HWDP Manufacturing Process

High-quality HWDP is typically manufactured using one of two methods to ensure high strength and fatigue resistance:

Raw Material Selection: High-strength alloy steel (usually AISI 4145H Modified or 4137H).

Forging & Heat Treatment: The material undergoes full-length quenching and tempering to achieve a yield strength of 110,000 psi or higher.

Boring: Precision deep-hole boring ensures a consistent and centered internal diameter (ID).

Assembly (For Welded Type):

The tool joints are manufactured separately and then friction welded to the thickened pipe body ends.

For Integral Type, the entire pipe is machined from a single solid bar of alloy steel (higher durability).

Hardbanding: Application of wear-resistant alloy (like Tungsten Carbide or Arnco) to the tool joints and the center wear pad.

Threading: Precision machining of API connections (NC38, NC50, etc.) followed by phosphating or copper plating to prevent galling.
