Product Introduction

API 5DP Drill Pipe is a high-strength steel tubular designed for oil, gas, geothermal, and mining drilling operations. It is manufactured in compliance with API Spec 5DP issued by the American Petroleum Institute (API), ensuring reliable performance under high torque, high pressure, and harsh downhole conditions.

Drill pipe serves as a critical component of the drill string, transmitting rotary power from the surface drilling rig to the bottom hole assembly (BHA) while circulating drilling fluids to the drill bit.

What is Drill Pipe?

Drill pipe is a heavy-duty steel tubular with threaded connections (pin and box ends) on both sides, used to connect surface drilling equipment with the bottom hole assembly (BHA).

Its main functions include:

Transmitting rotational torque from the surface to the drill bit

Circulating drilling mud to the drill bit for cooling and cuttings removal

Raising, lowering, and controlling the bottom hole assembly (BHA)

Withstanding high internal/external pressure, torsion, bending, and vibration during drilling operations

Drill pipe is designed for repeated use in oil and gas drilling operations and is a key load-bearing component of the drill string.

Drill String Components

A standard drill string consists of:

Kelly or Top Drive System

Drill Pipe

Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP)

Drill Collars

Function Overview:

Kelly / Top Drive: provides rotational drive

Drill pipe: main transmission and circulation conduit

HWDP: transition section reducing stress concentration

Drill collars: provide weight on bit (WOB)

What are the types of drill pipes?

1. The square drill pipe is located at the uppermost end of the drill string and comes in two types: square and hexagonal. It has the following functions: first, when drilling, the kelly cooperates with the core filler and the turntable core filler to transmit the ground rotation torque to the drill pipe, driving the drill string and drill bit to rotate; secondly, it withstands all the force of the drill string Weight; Thirty drilling fluid circulation channels.
2. Ordinary drill pipe: the basic component of the drill string. Its main function is to transmit torque and transport drilling fluid, and to continuously deepen the wellbore by gradually lengthening the drill pipe. Therefore, drill pipe plays a very important role in oil drilling.
3. Weighted drill pipe: Weighted drill pipe is similar to oil drill pipe. It is also a hollow steel column, about 10 meters long. However, the weight of a single piece is heavier than that of oil drill pipe, and the wall thickness is 2-3 times that of drill pipe. The weighted drill pipe is connected between the drill pipe and the drill collar to prevent fatigue damage caused by changes in the drill string cross-section. It can also replace part of the role of drill collars, but it is simple to hang and easy to operate during tripping, which can save time in tripping out.

FAQ

What is Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP)?

Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP) is a transition component between standard drill pipe and drill collars. It has thicker walls and higher stiffness, and is used to:

Reduce stress concentration in the drill string

Improve buckling resistance

Reduce fatigue failure risk

Provide a smooth transition of stiffness between drill pipe and drill collars

Improve drilling stability in directional wells

What sizes are available for API 5DP drill pipe?

Typical API 5DP drill pipe specifications include:

Outer Diameter (OD): 2 3/8" to 6 5/8"

Wall Thickness: 6.45 mm to 12.7 mm

Length Range: R1, R2, R3 (API standard length ranges measured in feet)

R2 is the most commonly used length in drilling operations.

What are R1, R2, and R3 lengths?

R1, R2, and R3 are API standard length ranges used in the oilfield industry:

R1: Short length range

R2: Medium and most commonly used length range

R3: Long length range used in deeper wells and offshore drilling

These ranges are defined by API in feet-based length classifications.

What thread connections are used in drill pipe?

Common API tool joint connections include:

NC26, NC31, NC38, NC40, NC46, NC50

FH series connections such as 5 1/2 FH and 6 5/8 FH

Connection selection depends on torque capacity, well depth, and drilling conditions.

What is IU, EU, and IEU in drill pipe?

These refer to upset (thickened end) types of drill pipe:

IU (Internal Upset): Internal wall thickening at pipe ends to improve strength

EU (External Upset): External wall thickening, widely used in standard API drill pipe

IEU (Internal-External Upset): Combined internal and external reinforcement for higher strength requirements

These designs improve connection strength and fatigue resistance.

What internal coatings are available for drill pipe?

Common internal coatings include:

TK34

TC2000

Arnco 100XT / 200XT / 300XT

These coatings reduce corrosion, minimize friction, improve flow efficiency, and extend service life in harsh drilling fluids.

What quality tests are performed on API 5DP drill pipe?

API 5DP drill pipe is typically subjected to:

Ultrasonic testing (UT) for internal and external defects

Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) for surface cracks

Hydrostatic pressure testing

Dimensional inspection

Thread gauging inspection

These tests ensure compliance with API Spec 5DP requirements.

What is the difference between drill pipe and drill collar?

Drill pipe: A relatively flexible tubular used to transmit torque and circulate drilling fluid
