Product Introduction

3PE Coated Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe is a seamless carbon steel pipe protected by a three-layer polyethylene (3PE or 3LPE) external coating system designed to provide long-term corrosion resistance for buried and submerged pipelines.
3PE (Three-Layer Polyethylene) coating is the industry standard for protecting underground and subsea seamless carbon steel pipelines. By combining the mechanical strength of API 5L Seamless Pipe with the superior chemical resistance of high-density polyethylene, 3PE coated pipes offer a service life of over 50 years in the harshest environments.
Whether you are transporting oil, gas, or water, our 3PE seamless pipes ensure minimal maintenance costs and maximum structural integrity against soil stress and bacterial corrosion.

Structure of 3PE Coating

Structure of 3PE Coating

A high-quality 3PE coating is not just a plastic wrap; it is a molecularly bonded system consisting of:

Layer 1: Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE) (≥100μm)

Function: The primer layer that bonds directly to the blasted steel surface.

Benefit: Provides excellent adhesion and superior resistance to cathodic disbondment.

Layer 2: Adhesive (AD) (170~250μm)

Function: A copolymer resin that acts as a bridge.

Benefit: Chemically bonds the FBE and the outer Polyethylene layer together, ensuring they don't delaminate.

Layer 3: High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) (1.8mm~4.7mm)

Function: The outer shield.

Benefit: Protects the pipe from mechanical damage (during transport and installation) and moisture penetration.

According to ISO 21809-1 and DIN 30670, the combination of these three layers provides significantly better corrosion resistance and impact resistance than single-layer coatings.

Why Apply 3PE Coating to Seamless Steel Pipe?

A common misunderstanding holds that seamless steel pipes do not need corrosion protection due to the absence of weld seams. This view is incorrect. Though seamless pipes successfully avoid defects associated with welding, their carbon steel base material is still susceptible to multiple forms of corrosion damage, including soil corrosion, groundwater erosion, chloride pollution, stray current corrosion, and corrosion in marine environments. It should be emphasized that 3PE coating does not serve to enhance the mechanical strength of seamless steel pipes. Its core function is to provide long-term protection for the pipe body against external corrosion and mechanical damage during the entire service cycle.

3PE coated seamless steel pipe has the following advantages:

Great Corrosion Resistance

The fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) primer adheres strongly to the steel surface and helps prevent under-film corrosion. The outer polyethylene layer acts as an effective barrier against moisture, oxygen, and corrosive substances, significantly reducing the corrosion rate of buried pipelines.

Excellent Mechanical Protection

The polyethylene outer layer provides excellent resistance to impact, abrasion, soil stress, and damage during handling, transportation, installation, and backfilling operations. This mechanical protection helps maintain coating integrity throughout the pipeline's service life.

Long Service Life

When properly applied and used in conjunction with cathodic protection systems, 3PE-coated pipelines can achieve service lives exceeding 30 years. Under favorable operating and environmental conditions, service lives of more than 50 years may be achievable.

Compatibility with Cathodic Protection

3PE coating systems are fully compatible with cathodic protection systems and are widely used together in buried pipeline applications. The combination provides enhanced long-term corrosion protection and helps reduce maintenance requirements.

Quality Control of 3PE coated steel pipe

To ensure the coating never fails, we perform the following tests:

Holiday Detection: 100% non-destructive spark test (typically at 25kV) to ensure zero pinholes in the coating.

Peel Strength Test: Destructive testing to verify the bond between the layers.

Impact Resistance: Ensuring the coating survives rocky trench backfilling.

Indentation Test: Verifying the hardness of the HDPE layer under temperature.

FAQ

Does a seamless steel pipe really need 3PE coating?

Yes. If the pipe is buried, submerged, or exposed to corrosive environments, external corrosion protection is typically required. While seamless pipe does not contain a longitudinal weld seam, the steel surface remains susceptible to corrosion.

Does 3PE coating increase pipe strength?

No. Mechanical properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, and pressure capacity are determined by the steel grade and pipe dimensions. The 3PE coating provides corrosion protection and additional resistance to mechanical damage.

What is the difference between FBE and 3PE?

FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) is a single-layer coating system. 3PE (Three-Layer Polyethylene) combines an FBE primer, an adhesive layer, and a polyethylene outer layer, providing superior impact resistance, moisture resistance, and long-term corrosion protection.

What is the maximum operating temperature of 3PE coating?

Standard 3PE coating systems are generally suitable for operating temperatures up to approximately 80°C, depending on the coating specification and project requirements. For higher operating temperatures, 3PP (Three-Layer Polypropylene) coating is often recommended due to its superior heat resistance.
