Coating system:
Internal coatings: For pipes carrying corrosive fluids, applying internal coatings can prevent corrosion and protect the materials being transported.
Exterior Coating: Exterior coating protects the outer surface of the pipe from environmental corrosion. Common exterior coatings include:
Fused-bonded epoxy (FBE): Applied as a dry powder to heated pipe surfaces to form a protective layer.
Three-layer polyethylene (3LPE) or polypropylene (3LPP): Consists of a melt-bonded epoxy resin layer, an adhesive layer, and a polyethylene or polypropylene layer.
Cathodic protection:
Electrochemical cathodic protection: involves attaching a sacrificial anode (usually made of zinc or magnesium) to the steel pipe. These anodes corrode instead of steel, thus providing protection.
Impressed current cathodic protection: Uses an external power source to apply an electric current to the steel to prevent corrosion.
Corrosion inhibitor:
Chemical Inhibitors: Corrosion inhibitors can be added to the fluid transported by the pipeline to reduce the corrosion effect on the steel.
Wrapping tape:
Asphalt-based tape: Tape used on the outer surface of pipes to provide a protective layer against corrosion.
Thermal Spray:
Metallic coating: A metallic coating (such as zinc or aluminum) is applied to the surface of the pipe using thermal spraying.
