Pipe Caps to ASTM A234, A420, A860 & A403: Standards, Materials, Dimensions and Buying Guide

‌Butt-weld pipe caps are used to close the end of a piping system and are selected according to the pipe material, design temperature, pressure requirements, wall thickness and applicable dimensional standard.

For carbon and alloy steel applications, common material specifications include ASTM A234 and ASTM A420. ASTM A860 covers high-strength ferritic steel butt-welding fittings, while ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings.

For standard factory-made butt-welding caps, dimensional requirements are generally specified to ASME B16.9. The material specification and the dimensional standard should therefore be stated separately in the purchase order.

 

1. What Is a Butt-Weld Pipe Cap?

A butt-weld pipe cap is a piping fitting used to close the end of a pipe. A butt-weld cap is welded directly to the pipe using a circumferential butt weld.

The cap has to be compatible with the piping system in terms of:

Nominal pipe size

Wall thickness

Material grade

Design pressure

Design temperature

Welding procedure

Applicable piping code

Common cap shapes include:

Ellipsoidal or dished caps

Hemispherical caps

Torispherical caps

Conical or special-profile closures for fabricated applications

The exact shape and construction depend on the dimensional standard and engineering design.

A pipe cap should not automatically be treated as a pressure-vessel head. Standard piping caps are manufactured and rated as piping fittings, while pressure-vessel heads are designed according to the applicable pressure-vessel code and calculation rules.

 

2. ASTM Standards for Pipe Caps

The most appropriate ASTM material specification depends on the service and the material of the piping system.

ASTM A234 covers wrought carbon and alloy steel fittings for pressure piping and pressure-vessel fabrication at moderate and elevated temperatures.

ASTM A860 covers high-strength ferritic steel butt-welding fittings for applications including high-pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems. The specification includes requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment and notch toughness.

ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings for pressure piping applications. Its WP grades also include different classes that identify construction and NDE requirements.

Important

ASTM material specifications and ASME dimensional standards serve different purposes.

For example:

ASTM A234 WPB + ASME B16.9

means:

A234 WPB → material and manufacturing requirements

ASME B16.9 → dimensional requirements for the butt-welding fitting

This distinction should be clear in an RFQ.

 

3. Common Pipe Cap Grade Selection

ASTM A234 WPB

A234 WPB is one of the most commonly specified carbon steel fitting grades.

It is frequently paired with carbon steel piping such as:

ASTM A106 Grade B

ASTM A53 Grade B

API 5L carbon steel pipe where the project specification permits A234 fittings

However, material matching should always follow the project piping specification rather than assuming that WPB is automatically acceptable for every carbon steel line.

 

ASTM A420 WPL6

A420 WPL6 is a low-temperature carbon steel fitting grade used where the piping system requires low-temperature toughness.

WPL6 is commonly associated with low-temperature applications and Charpy impact requirements. The actual minimum design temperature and impact-test requirements should be confirmed against the applicable specification and project design code.

Do not use a simple rule such as:

"Below −29°C, use WPL6."

Material selection should consider the actual design minimum temperature, thickness, impact-test requirements, piping code and project specification.

 

ASTM A860 WPHY Grades

A860 covers high-strength ferritic butt-welding fittings. Typical grades include:

WPHY 42

WPHY 52

WPHY 56

WPHY 60

WPHY 65

WPHY 70

These grades are commonly used in high-pressure oil and gas transmission applications where higher strength is required.

A860 is more than a material-strength designation. Heat treatment, notch toughness and other mechanical requirements also form part of the specification.

 

ASTM A403 Stainless Steel Grades

For stainless applications, common A403 grades include:

WP304

WP304L

WP316

WP316L

WP321

WP347

WP317

The exact grade and fitting class should be selected according to the piping material specification and service environment.

ASTM A403 requires heat treatment and includes requirements for chemical analysis, mechanical properties and visual examination.

 

4. Pipe Cap Dimensions and Size Range

Standard factory-made butt-welding caps are covered by ASME B16.9.

Common commercial sizes extend from:

NPS 1/2 through NPS 48

or approximately:

DN15 through DN1200

The exact dimensional availability depends on the fitting type, size and manufacturer.

For larger diameters or non-standard closures, the manufacturer may need to work from a customer drawing or project-specific dimensional specification.

 

What Should Be Specified?

A pipe cap RFQ should normally include:

NPS or DN

Outside diameter where required

Wall thickness or schedule

Material grade

Standard

Cap type

End preparation

Heat treatment

Inspection requirements

For example:

ASME B16.9, ASTM A234 WPB, NPS 12, SCH 40, butt-weld cap

is much clearer than:

12-inch carbon steel cap

 

5. Does the Cap Need the Same Schedule as the Pipe?

Not necessarily as a simple rule.

The cap wall thickness must satisfy the applicable dimensional standard and the pressure/design requirements of the piping system.

For a standard piping connection, buyers often specify the cap to match the pipe schedule, such as:

Pipe: NPS 8 SCH 80
Cap: NPS 8 SCH 80

However, the correct specification should be checked against the applicable standard, design pressure, temperature and fitting dimensions.

Do not use "the cap schedule must always equal or exceed the pipe schedule" as a universal engineering rule.

For non-standard or high-pressure applications, request the manufacturer's dimensional drawing and confirm the design basis before ordering.

 

6. Butt-Weld End Preparation

Butt-weld caps normally have a weld-end configuration suitable for butt welding to the pipe.

Where ASME B16.25 applies, the weld-end preparation is specified according to the standard.

The actual bevel configuration can also be affected by:

Wall thickness

Welding procedure

Pipe specification

Project welding requirements

Customer drawing

If your project has a specific weld-end preparation, include the drawing or welding specification with the RFQ.

 

7. Inspection and Testing

The inspection package should be based on the ASTM material specification, dimensional standard and project requirements.

Typical inspection items include:

Chemical Composition

Verify the heat chemistry against the specified material grade.

Mechanical Testing

Depending on the applicable standard and grade, testing may include:

Tensile testing

Hardness testing

Impact testing for low-temperature or specified services

Dimensional Inspection

Typical checks include:

Outside diameter

Wall thickness

Overall height

Inside diameter where applicable

End preparation

Roundness

Straightness/profile

Marking

NDE

Depending on the fitting specification and purchase requirements, NDE may include:

Ultrasonic testing

Magnetic particle testing

Liquid penetrant testing

Radiographic examination

The exact NDE method and acceptance criteria should be stated by the applicable standard or purchase specification.

For A403 fittings, the specification includes different classes associated with the construction method and extent/type of NDE.

PMI and Third-Party Inspection

For alloy and stainless steel projects, buyers may also request:

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Heat-number traceability

Third-party inspection

Dimensional inspection report

MTC review

Typical third-party agencies may include SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV or another agency nominated by the purchaser.

 

8. Pipe Cap vs. Pressure Vessel Head

A standard pipe cap and a pressure-vessel head are not interchangeable simply because both close the end of a vessel or pipe.

Pipe Cap

Typically used as a piping fitting and manufactured to applicable fitting standards such as ASME B16.9.

Pressure Vessel Head

Designed according to the applicable pressure-vessel code, such as:

ASME BPVC Section VIII

EN 13445

The head thickness, geometry, allowable stress and design calculations are determined differently.

If the component is part of a pressure vessel, do not substitute a standard piping cap without engineering approval.

Can an ASME B16.9 pipe cap be used as a pressure-vessel head?

Not automatically. A standard pipe cap is a piping fitting, while a pressure-vessel head must be designed and manufactured according to the applicable pressure-vessel code.
