ASTM A179 is a standard established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), with the full title "Standard Specification for Seamless Cold-Drawn Low-Carbon Steel Heat-Exchanger and Condenser Tubes." Below is an overview of its key specifications:
1. Scope of Application:
Applies to seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes with minimum wall thicknesses, intended for heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer equipment.
Covers outer diameter (OD) sizes from 1/8 inch to 3 inches (3.2 to 76.2 mm), though tubes with smaller OD or wall thickness may also be applicable. However, mechanical performance requirements may not apply to tubes with an OD < 1/8 inch (3.2 mm) or wall thickness < 0.015 inch (0.4 mm).
2. Chemical Composition:
The steel must meet specific chemical composition requirements:
Carbon content: 0.06%–0.18%
Manganese content: 0.27%–0.63%
Maximum phosphorus content: 0.035%
Maximum sulfur content: 0.035%
Alloy steels are exempt from these limits due to additional requirements for special elements.
3. Manufacturing Process:
Tubes must be seamless and cold-drawn.
After the final cold-drawing process, they must undergo heat treatment at 1200°F (650°C) or higher.
4. Surface Condition:
Finished tubes shall be free from scaling, with minor oxide residues not considered scaling.
5. Mechanical Properties & Testing Requirements:
Hardness: The Rockwell B hardness shall not exceed 72 HRB.
Mechanical testing includes flattening, flaring, flanging (as an alternative to flaring under specific conditions), hardness testing, and hydrostatic testing.
For flattening tests, 2 specimens are taken from each batch (1 per tube).
Hydrostatic testing is required for every tube unless replaced by nondestructive electrical testing per buyer request.
6. Product Marking:
In addition to general marking requirements, tubes must include the buyer's company name and order number.
