What Is an API 5CT Coupling?

An API 5CT coupling is a short, internally threaded steel component used to connect two lengths of casing or tubing.

The coupling has internal threads at both ends. The external threads on the pipe ends engage with the coupling threads to form the connection.

A typical coupling consists of:

Coupling body

Internal thread on each end

Thread runout/recess

Bearing or sealing surfaces where applicable

External surface marking and/or color identification

It does not consist of elbows, bolts or a central pipe body as described in some generic pipe-fitting definitions.

The coupling is designed specifically for OCTG connections and must be manufactured and inspected according to the applicable API requirements.

Suitable for scenarios in oil production where ‌frequent pipeline replacement, maintenance, or well depth adjustments‌ are required.

2. Casing Coupling vs. Tubing Coupling

The first decision when buying a coupling is whether it is for casing or tubing.

The exact available size and connection combination depends on the applicable API tables and product specification.

For a procurement order, do not use "API coupling" alone. State whether the component is a casing coupling or tubing coupling.

 

3. API 5CT Casing Couplings

Casing couplings are used to connect casing joints installed as part of the well's casing string.

Common API casing connections include:

STC - Short Thread and Coupling

STC is the Short Thread and Coupling connection.

It is commonly used for casing applications where the connection requirements are met by the API STC design.

LTC - Long Thread and Coupling

LTC means Long Thread and Coupling.

Compared with STC, LTC uses a longer thread engagement and is widely used for casing applications where the connection design calls for LTC.

BTC - Buttress Thread and Coupling

BTC means Buttress Thread and Coupling.

The buttress thread profile is widely used for casing because it provides a strong connection for axial loading.

API 5CT lists STC, LC and BC among the applicable casing connections, with the actual dimensional combinations controlled by the applicable API tables.

 

4. API 5CT Tubing Couplings

Tubing couplings connect sections of production tubing.

The two common API tubing connections are:

NU - Non-Upset Tubing

NU tubing uses a non-upset end and a corresponding non-upset coupling.

Because the tubing body is not externally upset at the connection, NU is commonly selected where the smaller connection profile is useful.

EU - External-Upset Tubing

EU tubing has an externally upset end, allowing a larger connection area.

EUE is commonly used where a stronger tubing connection and larger cross-sectional area are required.

API 5CT identifies NU and EU as standard tubing connections.

 

5. API 5CT Coupling Grades

The coupling grade needs to be checked against the connected pipe grade and the applicable API 5CT requirements.

Common grades include:

H40

J55

K55

N80

L80

P110

Other API 5CT grades are also available for specific applications.

Important: The Coupling Grade Is Not Always the Same as the Pipe Grade

This is an area where buyers often make mistakes.

API 5CT generally requires couplings to be of the same grade and type as the pipe body, except where alternative grades or heat treatments are specifically permitted.

For example:

H40 pipe may be furnished with H40, J55 or K55 couplings unless otherwise specified.

J55 pipe may be furnished with J55 or K55 couplings unless otherwise specified.

K55 pipe is furnished with K55 couplings unless otherwise specified.

J55 EU tubing may use L80 Type 1 special-clearance couplings when specified in the purchase agreement.

J55 and K55 buttress casing may use L80 Type 1 couplings when specified in the purchase agreement.

Therefore, a buyer should not automatically reject a coupling simply because its grade designation differs from the pipe grade. Check the applicable API 5CT clause and purchase agreement first.

 

6. H40, J55, K55, N80, L80 and P110: How Do They Differ?

The grade should be selected based on the well design, loading conditions, pressure, temperature and service environment rather than strength alone.

For sour-service applications, the material selection and supplementary requirements need particular attention. Do not assume that an ordinary API 5CT grade is automatically suitable for H₂S service.

 

7. Coupling Dimensions

Coupling dimensions are determined by the:

Nominal pipe size

Connection type

Coupling outside diameter

Coupling length

Thread form

Grade

Applicable API dimensional table

Typical casing coupling sizes cover the common casing range from 4-1/2 in. upward, while tubing couplings are commonly supplied for tubing sizes up to 4-1/2 in.

However, the coupling outside diameter and length are not simply equal to the pipe OD and length.

For example, a 2-7/8 in. tubing coupling has a larger outside diameter than the tubing itself because sufficient material is required for the internal thread.

Therefore, the buyer should always confirm the exact coupling dimensions from the applicable API 5CT/API 5B tables or the approved drawing.

 

8. Thread Standards: API 5CT vs. API 5B

This distinction is important when preparing an RFQ.

API 5CT

API 5CT specifies the technical delivery conditions for casing, tubing, pup joints, coupling stock, coupling material and related products.

It also identifies the applicable connection types and product requirements.

API 5B

API 5B deals with the threading and gauging of casing, tubing and line pipe threads, including requirements related to thread dimensions, gauges and inspection.

In practical terms:

API 5CT defines the OCTG product requirements; API 5B controls the applicable API thread and gauging requirements.

For threaded and coupled OCTG, both standards may therefore appear in the purchase specification.

 

9. What Should Be Inspected?

Thread quality is one of the most important inspection points for a coupling.

A dimensional inspection should normally cover items such as:

Coupling OD

Coupling length

Thread dimensions

Thread profile

Pitch

Taper

Thread depth

Thread crest/root condition

Gauge inspection

Surface condition

Marking and color coding

Depending on the grade, product specification level and purchase agreement, additional material and NDE requirements may apply.

The inspection package should be agreed before production rather than after the couplings are completed.

 

10. Thread Inspection and Gauging

A coupling can have the correct nominal OD and still fail to make up correctly if the thread is out of specification.

For this reason, thread inspection is critical.

The manufacturer should verify the applicable thread dimensions and gauge requirements in accordance with API 5B and the applicable API 5CT requirements.

For a procurement project, buyers should consider requesting:

Thread inspection records

Gauge inspection records

Dimensional inspection report

Material test report

Heat number traceability

Visual inspection

NDE records where required

Third-party inspection, if specified

For critical projects, the inspection plan should clearly define the acceptance criteria and applicable standard edition.

 

11. Surface Treatment

Couplings may be supplied with surface treatments specified by the buyer or applicable project requirements.

Common treatments include:

Phosphating

Zinc-based coating

Other approved corrosion-protection treatments

Surface treatment should be selected based on the operating environment and compatibility with the thread compound.

For API connections, the buyer should also specify whether the coupling is supplied loose or made up with the pipe.

That depends on the grade, service conditions and applicable supplementary requirements. If the well contains H₂S, specify the sour-service requirements in the RFQ and verify compliance with the applicable API and NACE/ISO requirements.
