How does the yield strength of API 5L L360 PSL2 compare to other grades?

Comparison with lower grades:
API 5L L360 PSL2 has higher yield strength than lower grades such as X42 and X46. The minimum yield strength of X42 is about 290MPa, the minimum yield strength of X46 is about 317MPa, and the yield strength range of L360 PSL2 is 360MPa - 510MPa. Its higher yield strength enables thinner pipe walls while maintaining the same rated pressure, which is conducive to reducing material cost and weight, and is more advantageous in some cost-sensitive oil and gas transmission branch lines or general industrial pipeline applications where pressure requirements are not extremely high.
Comparison with higher grades:
Compared with higher grades such as X60, X70 or X80, the yield strength of L360 grade is significantly lower. The minimum yield strength of X60 is about 414MPa, the minimum yield strength of X70 is about 483MPa, and the minimum yield strength of X80 is about 552MPa. These higher grade materials are often used in high-pressure applications, such as long-distance, large-diameter high-pressure oil and gas transmission trunk lines, or in deep-sea oil and gas extraction, where pipeline strength requirements are extremely high and weight reduction is critical, while L360 PSL2 is difficult to meet such high-strength demand scenarios.
Balancing strength and weldability:
A significant advantage of L360 PSL2 compared to higher grades is its excellent weldability. As the yield strength of higher grade steel increases, its carbon equivalent usually rises, which makes welding more difficult and requires more professional and complex welding procedures and more skilled welders. However, due to its moderate strength, L360 PSL2 is relatively easier to operate during the welding process, and the welding quality is easier to ensure, which can effectively reduce welding costs and the probability of welding defects, and is easier to construct in ordinary pipeline construction projects.
Toughness considerations:
L360 PSL2 generally provides a good balance between strength and toughness. Although higher grades of pipeline steel may provide higher strength, their toughness is often reduced. In pipeline applications, toughness is crucial to inhibiting the generation and expansion of cracks. L360 PSL2 can maintain the toughness of the material while meeting certain strength requirements. It can effectively prevent pipeline failure due to brittle fracture in pipeline laying areas with complex geological conditions, possible external force impact or large temperature changes, and ensure safe and stable operation of the pipeline.
