What are the grades of casing pipes

Casing pipe grades are categorized by the API 5CT specification. A "grade" defines the pipe's minimum yield strength, its chemistry, and the environment it is designed to handle (such as corrosive or high-pressure wells).

The grades are typically divided into four groups based on their properties:

Group 1: General Purpose (Sweet Service)

These are the most common and economical grades. They are used in wells where there is no Hydrogen Sulfide ( H2S ) and pressures are low to moderate.

H40: Low strength, rarely used in modern drilling.

J55: The "workhorse" for shallow, low-pressure wells. Economical and widely available.

K55: Similar to J55 but has higher tensile strength (harder to pull apart).

N80 (-1 or -Q): A mid-tier grade. N80-Q is Quenched and Tempered, making it tougher than the normalized N80-1.

 

Group 2: Restricted Yield (Sour Service)

These grades are designed specifically to resist Sulfide Stress Cracking (SSC) in wells containing H2S. They have strictly controlled hardness limits (usually max 23 HRC).

L80 (Type 1, 9Cr, 13Cr): The industry standard for sour service. 13Cr variants add Chromium for CO2​ resistance.

C90: Higher strength than L80 but still sour-resistant.

T95: High-strength sour service grade, often used in deep, high-pressure corrosive wells.

C110: The highest strength API grade that is still certified for sour service.

 

Group 3: High Strength (Deep/High Pressure)

These are used for very deep wells where the casing must support a massive amount of its own weight and withstand extreme internal pressures.

P110: A very common high-strength grade for deep, non-corrosive wells. It is marked with a white band.

 

Group 4: Special/Extreme High Strength

Q125: Designed for the most extreme environments. It has a minimum yield strength of 125,000 psi and requires rigorous testing of every single pipe joint.

Range 3 casing refers to a specific standard length of individual pipe joints as defined by the API 5CT specification.

Length: Between 34 and 48 feet (10.36 to 14.63 meters).

Comparison: It is the longest of the three API ranges (Range 1 is the shortest, Range 2 is the most common).

Advantage: Using longer Range 3 joints reduces the total number of connections (threaded joints) in the well, which speeds up the "running" process and reduces potential leak points.

Disadvantage: They are more difficult to transport and require taller drilling rig derricks to handle the extra length.
