What are the mechanical properties of API 5L X80 pipeline pipe

API 5L X80 is a high-strength pipeline steel, its mechanical properties need to meet the comprehensive requirements of oil and gas pipelines on the strength, toughness and corrosion resistance, the specific parameters are as follows:

1. Strength indicators
Yield strength:
Minimum yield strength of 80kpsi (about 552MPa), metric standards in some specifications require a lower limit of 555MPa, the upper limit can be up to 555MPa, the upper limit can be up to 705MPa.
Tensile Strength:
Tensile strength ranges from 625-825MPa, with some data indicating that 630-720MPa can be achieved in practical applications, ensuring stability in high stress environments.
Yield Strength Ratio:
Yield strength ratio (yield strength / tensile strength) requirements ≤ 0.93, some standards (such as Dangangshan Steel enterprise standards) further limited to ≤ 0.91, in order to prevent insufficient plastic deformation.
2. Toughness indicators
Low temperature impact toughness:
In -20℃ environment, Charpy V-notch impact work ≥40J, some application scenarios (such as deep-sea pipelines) require higher.
Elongation:
Transverse elongation ≥ 30%, to ensure that the material has good ductility when subjected to force.
3. Other key properties
Welding performance:
Adopting low carbon (C≤0.12%) and micro-alloying design, the weldability is excellent, suitable for manual or automatic welding process of large pipeline projects.
Corrosion resistance:
With the ability to resist hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulphide stress corrosion (SSC), it is suitable for acidic environments containing hydrogen sulphide (H₂S).
4. Application verification requirements
Testing standards: need to comply with API SPEC 5L-2012 or GB/T 9711-2019, and verify the third-party report of impact work, tensile strength and other data reported by the third party.
Process status: Usually delivered in hot rolled or normalised condition, with some special requirements for TMCP process to optimise the organisational homogeneity.
Note: In practice, it is necessary to select the matching strength and toughness parameters according to the project requirements (e.g. conveying pressure, ambient temperature), and to ensure that the welding process is compatible with the properties of the base material.
