Product Introduction

Basic Definition of API 5L Gr B Pipe

API Spec 5L governs steel pipe for cross-country fluid transmission lines. The "Gr B" grade refers to a carbon steel grade with a minimum yield strength (SMYS) of 245 MPa (35,500 psi), higher strength than API 5L Grade A. Two core Product Specification Levels (PSL1, PSL2) define strict differences in chemical limits, mechanical testing, non-destructive inspection and service suitability.

Standard Code: API Spec 5L 47th Edition (2026 latest release)

ISO Equivalent Mark: L245

Core Design Purpose: Onshore & offshore crude oil, natural gas, refined fuel and produced water transmission pipelines

Excluded Application: High-temperature boiler piping (use ASTM A106 Gr B instead) and general low-pressure structural tubing (ASTM A53 Gr B)

Critical Classification: PSL1 vs PSL2 API 5L Gr B Pipe

The biggest engineering distinction for API 5L Gr B lies in PSL1 (base standard) and PSL2 (enhanced strict standard). PSL2 is mandatory for cold climate, high-pressure, densely populated hazardous zones and sour H₂S service pipelines.

PSL1 Grade B (General Service)

PSL1 meets minimum baseline requirements for low-risk ordinary pipelines, with loose chemical limits, optional partial NDT and no mandatory toughness testing.

Chemical rules: Higher max Carbon, Phosphorus and Sulfur; no mandatory carbon equivalent (CE) control

Mechanical rules: Only minimum yield & tensile strength specified, no upper strength limits

Testing scope: Hydrostatic test per pipe, sampling weld NDT, visual & dimensional inspection

Permitted pipe ends: Plain, threaded, belled, special coupling ends

Applicable manufacturing: All SMLS, ERW, LSAW, SSAW, LFW welding processes

PSL2 Grade B (High Specification Critical Service)

PSL2 imposes tight, non-negotiable control over steel purity, toughness and full inspection, with four standardized delivery condition suffixes: BR, BN, BQ, BM.

Strict chemical limits: Lower C, ultra-low P & S; Carbon equivalent (CEIIW or CEpcm), calculated in accordance with API Spec 5L requirements, shall comply with the specified limits.

Dual mechanical limits: Yield strength range 245–450 MPa, tensile strength 415–655 MPa; maximum yield-to-tensile ratio ≤0.93

Mandatory destructive test: Mandatory Charpy V-Notch (CVN) impact testing at specified test temperatures

Full NDT requirement: 100% ultrasonic / radiographic inspection for pipe body and all weld seams

PSL2 Delivery Condition Suffix Explanation

Suffix Mark Full Name Application Scenario
BR / L245R As-Rolled General medium-pressure PSL2 pipelines
BN / L245N Normalized General cold-region pipelines, balanced toughness
BQ / L245Q Quenched & Tempered Sour H₂S service, high-pressure critical lines (NACE MR0175 required)
BM / L245M Thermomechanical Rolled HFW/ERW welded PSL2 pipe only

Four Main Manufacturing Types of API 5L Gr B Pipe

SMLS Seamless Pipe: Pierced solid steel billet, zero weld seam. Preferred for small-medium diameter high-pressure pipelines. Size range: 13.7 mm – 1200 mm OD

ERW/HFW Electric Resistance Welded Pipe: Rolled steel coil formed & high-frequency welded, cost-efficient for medium-pressure projects. Size range: 21.3 mm – 660 mm OD

LSAW Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (JCOE/UOE): Large-diameter thick-wall pipe for high-pressure trunk lines. Size range: 355.6 mm – 1500 mm OD

SSAW/SAWH Spiral Submerged Arc Welded Pipe: Ultra-large diameter transmission lines, suitable for both low & high pressure service. Size range: 219.1 mm – 3500 mm OD

Core Application Fields of API 5L Gr B Pipe

Primary Authorized Service (Design Priority)

Onshore & offshore oil/gas gathering & long-distance trunk pipelines

Refinery low-medium pressure process piping & valve station connecting lines

Municipal & industrial large-volume water injection / water distribution pipelines

Suitable for certain CO₂ transportation projects when specified by the applicable design code and project requirements.

Secondary Limited Service (Non-critical projects only)

Foundation piling & temporary structural supports

Cable casing / conduit for underground utility routing

General sewage transmission lines (confirm water chemical compatibility first)

Important Reminder: API 5L Gr B is not designed as pressure vessel main body material.

Equivalent Material Standards (Not Interchangeable)

Standard System Equivalent Grade Core Design Difference
API 5L Gr B (L245) Oil/gas fluid transmission line pipe
ASTM / ASME A106 Gr B / SA106 Gr B High-temperature steam & boiler seamless pipe only
ASTM A53 Gr B General low-pressure fluid & structural tubing

FAQ

Q1: What is API 5L Gr B Pipe used for?

A1: It is the baseline carbon steel line pipe for onshore, offshore oil, natural gas, refined product and produced water transmission pipelines. It also supports municipal water delivery and CCUS carbon dioxide transport projects under API Spec 5L 47th Edition. It is not intended for high-temperature boiler piping or critical structural load-bearing members.

Q2: What is the core difference between PSL1 and PSL2 API 5L Gr B?

A2: PSL1 is basic grade for low-risk ordinary pipelines with loose chemical limits, optional NDT and no impact test. PSL2 is upgraded high-spec grade with tighter C/P/S control, mandatory carbon equivalent limits, full 100% NDT, compulsory CVN low-temperature impact test, restricted pipe ends and dual upper/lower mechanical strength limits for seismic/strain-based pipeline design.

Q3: Can standard API 5L Gr B pipe be used for sour H₂S service?

A3: Standard API 5L Grade B is not automatically qualified for sour service. Pipelines containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) require materials manufactured and tested in accordance with the sour service requirements of API Spec 5L (where applicable) and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, including stricter controls on hardness, chemical composition and resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC).

Q4: Is API 5L Gr B identical to ASTM A106 Gr B?

A4: They share similar minimum yield strength (245 MPa) but are not interchangeable. ASTM A106 Gr B is exclusively for high-temperature steam, boiler and refinery thermal piping, limited to seamless production. API 5L Gr B is designed for long-distance fluid transmission pipelines, supporting seamless and multiple welded manufacturing processes. Some pipes can be dual-certified for both standards per client request.

Q5: Why choose API 5L Gr B instead of X42 / X52 higher steel grades?

A5: Three core advantages: 1) Lower carbon content delivers excellent field weldability, minimal pre-heating requirement for most construction conditions; 2) Full global stock availability with complete schedule size coverage, short delivery lead time; 3) Lowest raw material & production cost within the full API 5L steel grade series, fully meeting pressure requirements for standard mid-low risk pipeline projects.

Q6: What pipe end types are permitted for PSL2 Grade B?

A6: Only plain ends (beveled or flat plain) are allowed for PSL2 API 5L Gr B pipe. Threaded ends, belled expansion ends and special coupling ends are strictly prohibited per API Spec 5L 47th Edition safety regulations.

Q7: What is the latest official standard for API 5L Gr B Pipe?

A7: The current active global standard is API Spec 5L 47th Edition, which updates welding inspection rules, adds dedicated CO₂ pipeline clauses and tightens sour service material impurity limits compared to the older 46th Edition.
