What grade of steel is X52?

X52 steel pipe is a core grade in API 5L "Specification for Line Pipe" and falls into the PSL1 and PSL2 (higher quality grade) categories for oil and gas transmission steel. Its grade designation follows international conventions:

"X"‌: Denotes the Pipeline Steel classification.

"52"‌: Indicates a minimum yield strength of 52 ksi (~358 MPa).

This steel grade, through low-carbon micro-alloying design and thermo-mechanical controlled rolling (TMCP) process, offers high strength and toughness while exhibiting excellent resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSC), making it the material of choice for both onshore and offshore oil and gas pipelines.

Niobium (Nb)‌: 0.01%-0.06% - Enables precipitation strengthening

Vanadium (V)‌: ≤0.06% - Improves hot rolling stability

Titanium (Ti)‌: ≤0.04% - Fixes nitrogen and enhances toughness

Sulfur (S)/Phosphorus (P)‌: ≤0.010% and ≤0.020% - Controls segregation and brittleness

Critical weldability indices‌:

Carbon equivalent (Ceq, IIW formula) ≤0.43%

Cold cracking susceptibility coefficient (Pcm) ≤0.20%
