What is a long seam weld?

‌Long seam welding‌ is a welding method characterized by continuous welding along the entire length of the weldment joint to form a continuous weld. It is a pipe obtained by straight seam welding on welding equipment made of hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel plates or steel strips. The name is derived from the fact that the welds of the steel pipe are in a straight line.

Long seam welded pipes are known for their high strength, reliability and ease of production. They can be used to transport fluids such as oil, natural gas, water, and can also be used as building structural materials. The longitudinal welding process ensures the quality of the weld, the weld strength is high, and it has certain corrosion resistance and pressure resistance.
Long seam welded pipes are widely used in heavy steel structure engineering, fluid transportation, long-distance pipelines and other fields. Due to its large diameter, thick wall, high pressure resistance, low temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance, straight seam submerged arc welded pipes are particularly important in the construction of high-strength, high-quality long-distance oil and gas pipelines.
The size of these pipes is usually defined by their outer diameter (OD) and wall thickness. The length of the pipe can vary depending on shipping constraints and specific project requirements.
In terms of diameter, the product can be manufactured from approximately 16 inches to over 100 inches. The upper diameter limit is usually determined by the capabilities of the manufacturing equipment and shipping constraints.
Depending on the application requirements, the wall thickness can range from approximately 6 mm to 50 mm or more. Thicker walls are used for high pressure applications or those requiring additional structural strength.
