L245M straight seam steel pipe belongs to the pipeline steel series in API 5L standard. "L" represents pipeline steel, "245" indicates that the minimum yield strength is 245MPa, and "M" indicates that the material is produced by thermomechanical rolling process (TMCP). Compared with the traditional hot rolling process, its grains are finer and it has higher low-temperature toughness and weldability.
According to API 5L standards, L245M steel pipes have strict requirements for chemical composition, with carbon content controlled below 0.22% and manganese content between 0.9% and 1.6%, while also limiting the content of harmful elements such as sulfur and phosphorus.
In terms of mechanical properties, in addition to a yield strength of 245 MPa, the tensile strength must reach at least 415 MPa, and the elongation must be no less than 23%. These performance indicators ensure the safety and reliability of the steel pipes under high-pressure transportation environments.
Production Process Flow
The production of L245M welded steel pipe mainly involves the following key processes:
1. Steel Plate Pretreatment: Hot-rolled coils are used as raw materials. Pretreatment processes include uncoiling, leveling, and edge trimming to ensure flatness.
2. Forming Process: The flat plate is gradually bent into a tube shape through multiple roll bending processes. Precise control of the forming angle and pressure is required during forming to avoid edge waviness or misalignment.
3. Resistance Welding: This is the most crucial process. Utilizing the skin effect and proximity effect of high-frequency current, the edges of the pipe are instantly heated to a molten state, achieving metallurgical bonding under the action of extrusion rollers. The welding temperature is typically controlled between 1350-1400°C.
4. Weld Treatment: Immediately after welding, internal and external burrs are removed, and online heat treatment is performed to eliminate welding stress and improve weld microstructure.
5. Sizing and Finishing: The steel pipe is dimensionally calibrated using a sizing machine, followed by quality inspections such as hydrostatic testing and non-destructive testing.

Technical Advantages and Application Areas
Compared to spiral welded pipes and other processed steel pipes, L245M welded pipes have significant advantages:
1. High dimensional accuracy: Diameter tolerance can be controlled within ±0.5%, and wall thickness tolerance within ±10%, making it particularly suitable for pipeline systems requiring high-precision connections.
2. Good weld quality: The straight seam structure formed by resistance welding is simple, with low residual stress, resulting in more uniform stress distribution under internal pressure.
3. High production efficiency: Continuous production allows for speeds of 20-40 meters per minute, suitable for large-volume orders.
Main application areas include:
- Oil and gas transportation: Used for the construction of main pipelines on land and subsea, with working pressures typically between 4-12 MPa.
- Urban pipe networks: Used as the main pipe material for gas and water supply networks, with diameters ranging from 219-610 mm.
- Structural pipes: Used as supporting structural components in construction, bridges, and other fields.
- Special applications: L245M steel pipes, after anti-corrosion treatment, can be used in corrosive environments such as chemical and power industries.
