What is API 5L L245N Seamless Steel Line Pipe

The L245N pipeline steel designation originates from the API SPEC 5L standard (American Petroleum Institute standard). "L" represents pipeline steel, "245" indicates a minimum yield strength of 245 MPa (approximately 35 ksi), and "N" indicates a normalized heat treatment state.

 

Characteristics:

1. Composition: Carbon content ≤0.16%, manganese content 1.2%~1.4%, with trace amounts of niobium (Nb), vanadium (V), etc., added to improve strength and toughness (refer to API 5L-2018 standard).

2. Mechanical Properties:

- Yield strength ≥245 MPa (minimum), tensile strength 415~760 MPa;

- Impact toughness requirement: Charpy impact energy ≥40J at -20℃ (data from GB/T 9711-2017).

Typical applications: Commonly used in onshore and subsea oil and gas pipelines. Due to its low sulfur and phosphorus content (S≤0.015%, P≤0.025%), it is corrosion resistant and its low-temperature performance can be further improved through normalizing.

Key Performance Indicators and Testing Methods

1. Mechanical Property Testing: Tensile testing (determining yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation) and Charpy impact testing are required according to ASTM A370 standards. Typical mechanical properties of L245N are: yield strength 245-450 MPa, tensile strength ≥415 MPa, and elongation ≥23%.

2. Non-destructive Testing Technology: API 5L mandates full-length ultrasonic testing (UT) for all steel pipes, with sensitivity capable of detecting artificial defects within 5% of the wall thickness. For high-pressure gas pipelines, eddy current testing or radiographic testing is also required to ensure the absence of surface and internal defects.

3. Corrosion Resistance Verification: For pipes used in acidic environments, NACE TM0177 standard HIC (hydrogen-induced cracking) and SSC (sulfide stress corrosion) tests are required. After immersion in a standard solution for 96 hours, the crack sensitivity rate (CSR), crack length ratio (CLR), and crack thickness ratio (CTR) must all be ≤2%.
