S31254, also known as 254 SMO or UNS S31254, is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel developed specifically for use in severely corrosive environments. This super austenitic stainless steel offers excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, making it ideal for demanding applications across a wide range of industries. S31254 is characterized by its high molybdenum and nitrogen content, which contribute to its excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.
In terms of corrosion resistance, S31254 is significantly superior to standard austenitic grades such as 304 and 316. Its high molybdenum content (6-7%) provides excellent protection against pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-containing environments. S31254 offers better resistance to localized corrosion than 316L, which has a molybdenum content of 2-3%.
S31254 generally exhibits comparable or slightly better corrosion resistance than other super austenitic grades such as 904L (UNS N08904) and 6Mo (UNS S31254). However, due to its optimized composition, it may have an advantage in certain corrosive environments.
Duplex stainless steels such as 904L (UNS N08904) offer good corrosion resistance and higher strength, but S31254 generally performs better in severe chloride environments and at higher temperatures.
In terms of ductility and toughness, S31254 maintains similar good properties to other austenitic grades. It has better ductility than duplex steels, which is an advantage in applications involving forming or where high elongation is required.
