API 5L X42 PSL1 And PSL2 line pipe description

X42 line pipe must strictly adhere to the core specifications of API SPEC 5L, version 46, and also comply with the corresponding requirements of the national standard GB/T 9711. Its international equivalent standards include EN 10208-2 L290 and ISO 3183 L290. The standard explicitly requires: outer diameter deviation ≤ ±0.75%, wall thickness tolerance controlled within +15%/-12.5%; it must pass 100% ultrasonic testing and eddy current testing, with defect detection sensitivity reaching the equivalent of a Φ1.6mm flat-bottom hole; mainstream products have passed SGS third-party testing, and the hydrostatic test pressure is not less than 15MPa.

The API 5L standard classifies line pipe into two grades: PSL1 (normal quality) and PSL2 (high quality). X42 PSL2 belongs to the latter, requiring stricter requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and non-destructive testing.

API 5L PSL1 V.S. API 5L PSL2 SSAW Pipe

  • The delivery condition of PSL1 spiral steel pipe is selected by the manufacturer, while the delivery condition of PSL2 steel pipe shall meet the requirements specified in the purchase contract for the steel grade.
  • The steel for PSL2 steel pipe shall be fine-grained killed steel, which is not specified for PSL1.
  • The steel strip or steel plate used for manufacturing PSL2 steel pipe shall not have any repaired welds, and the pipe body shall not be repaired; this regulation does not apply to PSL1 steel pipe.
  • The chemical composition of PSL1 and PSL2 steel pipes with the same strength level is different.
  • The *steel grade of PSL1 steel pipe is L485/X70, while that of PSL2 steel pipe is L830M/X120M.
  • For PSL1 steel pipe, the yield strength and tensile strength are only specified with minimum values, without maximum values or specified yield strength ratios; for PSL2 steel pipe, both minimum and maximum values of yield strength and tensile strength are specified, and the maximum value of the yield strength ratio is also defined.
