What is the difference between N80 and L80 tubing?
The big difference is that N80 may be normalized, normalized and tempered, or quenched and tempered where L80 must be quench and tempered. Since it is quenched and tempered, L80 can be suitable for some sour environments, particularly if the hardness is kept below 23 HRC.

Corrosion & Sour Service Considerations

API 5CT N80 is carbon steel and is not inherently resistant to sour service environments containing H₂S.

Suitable for: non-sour or mild CO₂ environments

Not suitable for: sour service unless specifically qualified

For sour service applications, materials such as L80, C90, or T95 (NACE MR0175 compliant) should be selected.

Coating options (FBE, 3PE, 3PP) may improve external corrosion resistance in CO₂ environments but do not replace material selection requirements.
