Because it is difficult to manufacture every pipe to an exact, identical length, the American Petroleum Institute (API) established three standard length intervals in the API 5DP specification, known as Range 1, Range 2, and Range 3.

What is Range 2 (R2)?
Range 2 is the "Workhorse" of the drilling industry.
Standardization: Most drilling rig mast heights, pipe racks, and transport trailers worldwide are specifically designed around Range 2 dimensions (approx. 9 meters).
Logistics: It is perfectly sized for standard flatbed truck transportation.
Operations: Rig crews typically connect three R2 joints together to form a "Stand" (approx. 27–29 meters). This is the standard handling unit for most offshore and onshore rigs.
What is Range 3 (R3)?
Range 3 is the "Extended-Length" drill pipe.
Fewer Connections: Because each pipe is longer, you need fewer joints to reach the target depth. For a 1,000-meter well, using R3 requires roughly 30% fewer threaded connections compared to R2.
Advantages:
Reduced Leak Paths: Fewer tool joints mean a lower probability of thread galling or leaking.
Tripping Speed: If the rig mast is tall enough, R3 reduces the number of connections that need to be screwed or unscrewed during tripping, saving time.
Hydraulic Efficiency: Tool joints create internal diameter restrictions; fewer joints reduce the total pressure drop within the mud circulation system.
Disadvantages:
Logistics Challenges: Requires specialized, extra-long trailers, which increases transport costs.
Rig Requirements: Only large, high-capacity masts or derricks can safely accommodate the height of an R3 joint.
