Corrosion Resistance of API 5L L360 Pipe: Coatings and Sour Service

L360 Line Pipe and Its Place in API 5L

L360 is a line pipe designation in API Specification 5L and ISO 3183. The figure 360 is the specified minimum yield strength in MPa, which corresponds to the imperial grade X52 at 52 000 psi. Three delivery conditions are defined: L360M for thermo-mechanically rolled pipe, L360N for normalized pipe and L360Q for quenched and tempered pipe. All three share the same strength level but differ in chemistry, toughness and the way the structure is developed.

It is worth stating plainly that a carbon steel such as L360 has no intrinsic corrosion resistance. Bare steel will corrode in wet, oxygen-bearing, acidic or chloride-rich environments at a rate set by the medium, the temperature and the flow regime. What governs the service life of an L360 pipeline is therefore the combination of controlled chemistry, an external coating system, internal protection where needed and cathodic protection.

Chemistry and How It Affects Corrosion Behaviour

Element PSL2 limit for X52, seamless PSL2 limit for X52, welded Effect on corrosion and service
Carbon (C) 0.24 % max 0.22 % max Raises strength; excess carbon lowers weldability and toughness
Manganese (Mn) 1.40 % max 1.45 % max Adds strength and toughness and counteracts sulphur
Phosphorus (P) 0.025 % max 0.025 % max Impurity; embrittles the steel and promotes corrosion in acid media
Sulphur (S) 0.015 % max 0.015 % max Forms inclusions that act as corrosion initiation sites and reduce toughness
Niobium + Vanadium + Titanium 0.15 % max total 0.15 % max total Micro-alloying for grain refinement; no adverse effect on corrosion

Low phosphorus and sulphur are the practical points for corrosion. Calcium-treated, low-sulphur steel keeps inclusions small and globular, which lowers the number of sites where pitting can start and improves resistance to hydrogen-induced cracking in wet H2S service.

External Protection: Three-Layer Polyethylene Systems

Buried and submarine lines are protected externally by a three-layer polyethylene coating, specified to ISO 21809-1. The build-up, from the steel surface outwards, is a fusion-bonded epoxy primer, a copolymer adhesive layer and an extruded polyethylene topcoat, giving a total thickness normally in the range of about 2.5 mm to 4 mm. The epoxy primer provides adhesion and resistance to cathodic disbondment, the adhesive bonds the polyethylene to the primer, and the polyethylene outer layer resists mechanical damage, moisture ingress and weathering.

Other systems are selected to suit the service: single-layer fusion-bonded epoxy for high-temperature lines, three-layer polypropylene where operating temperature exceeds the limit of polyethylene, and concrete weight coating for submarine lines where negative buoyancy is required. Field joints are coated with heat-shrink sleeves or a compatible liquid coating so that the coating system is continuous along the pipeline.

Internal Corrosion, Sour Service and Cathodic Protection

Internal corrosion is driven by the produced fluid rather than by the pipe: carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, chlorides, water and bacteria all contribute, and the rate depends strongly on temperature, flow velocity and whether the water phase wets the steel. Dry gas transmission needs no internal coating; wet or aggressive service is handled by dehydration, inhibitors, internal flow coating applied to API RP 5L2, or by selecting a corrosion-resistant alloy clad pipe instead.

For sour service, API 5L and ISO 3183 include supplementary requirements for pipe intended to resist hydrogen-induced cracking and sulphide stress cracking, and the material is additionally qualified under ISO 15156. Such pipe is ordered with restricted hardness, chemistry and carbon equivalent, and is verified by hydrogen-induced cracking testing in a standard acid solution, so that the steel remains resistant in wet H2S. Cathodic protection is applied to the buried pipeline as the final barrier; it works only in combination with a sound coating, which is why coating holiday detection and adhesion testing form part of the mill inspection routine.

Applications

Oil and gas transmission and gathering lines in onshore and offshore projects.

Chemical and petrochemical transfer lines carrying aggressive media.

Marine engineering and port pipelines, where salt spray and immersion demand a heavy coating system.

Water conveyance and slurry lines where abrasion and mild corrosion occur together.

FAQ

Q: Is API 5L L360 pipe corrosion resistant by itself?
No. L360 is a carbon steel and will corrode in wet or acidic environments. Resistance comes from the coating system, from cathodic protection and, for internal surfaces, from fluid treatment or an internal coating.

Q: What does the M, N or Q suffix mean on L360 pipe?
It states the delivery condition. L360M is thermo-mechanically rolled, L360N is normalized and L360Q is quenched and tempered. Each condition gives a different balance of toughness and weldability at the same strength level.

Q: What is a three-layer polyethylene coating?
It is an external coating of fusion-bonded epoxy primer, copolymer adhesive and extruded polyethylene topcoat, applied to ISO 21809-1. It combines adhesion with high resistance to mechanical damage, moisture and cathodic disbondment.

Q: How is internal corrosion controlled in an L360 pipeline?
By keeping the line dry where possible, by chemical inhibition, and by internal flow coating applied in accordance with API RP 5L2 or by using a corrosion-resistant alloy liner for severely aggressive service.

Q: Can L360 pipe be used in sour service?
Yes, if it is ordered to the sour service supplementary requirements of API 5L or ISO 3183 and qualified to ISO 15156. Such pipe has restricted hardness and chemistry and is tested for hydrogen-induced cracking and sulphide stress cracking.

Q: What is the yield strength of L360 pipe?
The specified minimum yield strength is 360 MPa, equivalent to 52 000 psi, with a minimum tensile strength of 460 MPa for PSL2 material.
