What is the difference between API 5L X52 and A106?

API 5L X52 (American Petroleum Institute Specification 5L) and ASTM A106 (American Society for Testing and Materials Specification A106) are different specifications that cover different aspects of steel pipes in different applications.

ASTM A106
It is mainly used in industries such as petrochemical, power generation and process piping. It is designed for use in high temperature environments (temperatures up to 750°F or 400°C) and is aimed at seamless carbon steel pipes. Its specifications are specifically for applications in high temperature environments and do not cover steel pipes for other specific purposes. This specificity allows it to perform well in high temperature conditions.
API 5L X52
API 5L X52 is mainly used in the oil and gas industry for the transportation of natural gas, water and oil. It includes two types of seamless steel pipes and welded steel pipes. There are two different grades under the API 5L specification: PSL1 and PSL2. Among them, PSL2 has more stringent requirements, with higher standards in chemical composition and mechanical properties, and requires non-destructive testing and water pressure testing of each steel pipe to ensure the safety and integrity of the pipeline during transportation. This makes API 5L X52 excellent in pipeline applications for transporting oil, natural gas and water in the petroleum industry.
In general, the two have their own characteristics. API 5L X52 focuses on transportation in the petroleum industry, while ASTM A106 focuses on seamless carbon steel pipes in high-temperature environments in various industries.
