API 5L X 42 PSL1 Coated Line Pipe description
X42 pipeline steel tubing is a commonly used type of pipeline steel tubing, compliant with API 5L (American Petroleum Institute standards) and classified as X-series (high-strength) pipeline steel tubing. The number "42" indicates its minimum yield strength of 420 MPa (approximately 60,000 psi). PSL1 pipeline tubing is a widely used pipeline material in the oil and gas industry, with its full name being "Pipeline Steel Level 1," representing one of the pipeline tubing grades defined under API 5L standards.
In terms of chemical composition, PSL1 pipeline tubing imposes strict limits on elements such as carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus. For instance, carbon content is typically controlled below 0.22%, while sulfur and phosphorus contents are kept at no more than 0.030% and 0.025%, respectively. This composition design aims to balance the strength and toughness of the pipeline, preventing welding cracks or low-temperature brittle fractures due to excessive element levels. Additionally, PSL1 has relatively relaxed controls on non-metallic inclusions but must meet basic purity requirements to ensure the long-term service reliability of the pipeline.
Regarding mechanical properties, PSL1 pipeline tubing exhibits a yield strength range of 245-450 MPa, with a tensile strength of no less than 415 MPa and an elongation rate of over 21%. These indicators ensure that the pipeline maintains sufficient deformation capability without rupturing when subjected to internal pressure, external forces, or temperature changes. Compared to PSL2, PSL1 has slightly lower mechanical performance requirements but simpler manufacturing processes and cost advantages, making it widely applicable in scenarios where performance demands are not stringent.
In manufacturing processes, PSL1 pipeline tubing is typically produced through hot rolling or hot expanding methods. Hot rolling refines the steel grain structure at high temperatures to enhance overall performance, while hot expanding changes the pipe diameter through internal pressure expansion, making it suitable for large-diameter pipeline production. Regardless of the process, parameters such as rolling temperature and cooling rate must be strictly controlled during production to ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the pipeline. Furthermore, PSL1 pipeline tubing does not require impact testing, further simplifying the manufacturing process.
