What is duplex stainless steel?

Duplex stainless steel is a metal with unique austenitic and ferritic properties. It consists of roughly equal parts of both types, giving the best qualities of each type. Austenitic steels are known for their high strength, while ferritic steels have excellent corrosion resistance.

This alloy has become increasingly popular due to its exceptional ability to maintain its mechanical and physical properties even under extreme temperature fluctuations or high pressure conditions.

Duplex stainless hot rolled steel pipe is a steel material that combines the advantages of austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. The composition of duplex stainless steel usually consists of chromium, nickel, molybdenum and nitrogen.

The amount of each element in the composition may vary depending on the specific grade or alloy. However, in general, duplex stainless steels have a higher chromium content (approximately 22%) than conventional austenitic stainless steels. This high content of chromium gives it excellent corrosion resistance. In addition to chromium, duplex stainless steels contain approximately 5-8% nickel, which provides additional strength and toughness. Molybdenum is added to enhance resistance to pitting corrosion, while nitrogen helps improve solderability.

cold rolled Duplex stainless steel has a lower coefficient of thermal expansion than other types of steel, making it more dimensionally stable at high temperatures. This property allows it to maintain its shape under extreme heat conditions.

Unlike other types of materials that lose ductility at low temperatures, Duplex stainless seamless pipe remain ductile even at sub-zero temperatures, making them ideal for use in cryogenic applications such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation systems.
