Product Introduction

ASME SA53 Grade B ERW pipe is welded carbon steel tubing produced by the electric resistance welding (ERW) process and supplied to the ASME SA53 / ASTM A53 specification. Within SA53, Grade B denotes the higher-strength grade (minimum tensile 415 MPa / 60 ksi, yield 240 MPa / 35 ksi). The same grade is made in two forms: Type S (seamless) and Type E (electric-resistance welded). This page covers Type E (ERW), which is formed from steel skelp, welded along a single straight seam, and then sized, tested, and optionally hot-dip galvanized.

Grade B ERW is one of the most widely used carbon steel pipes for low- to medium-pressure systems. It welds, bends, and threads readily, and is stocked in black (bare) and zinc-coated versions for indoor and outdoor duty.

Scope and Standard

ASME SA53 is the boiler-and-pressure-vessel-code edition of ASTM A53 / A53M - Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless. The specification covers nominally sized pipe intended for mechanical and pressure applications and for ordinary uses in steam, water, gas, and air lines.

SA53 is issued in three types and two grades:

Type S - Seamless (hot-finished or cold-drawn); Grades A and B.

Type E - Electric-resistance welded (ERW); Grades A and B. This is the form covered on this page.

Type F - Furnace-butt welded (continuous weld); Grade A only (not available in Grade B).

SA53 Grade B is commonly dual-certified with ASTM A106 Grade B seamless pipe, but the two are distinct products. This page addresses only the welded (Type E) form.

Equivalent and Related Standards

SA53 Grade B ERW is comparable to the following non-alloy welded pipe/tube standards (grade matching should be confirmed against the specific procurement spec):

ASTM A53 / ASME SA53 - the governing specification (Type E, Grade B).

EN 10217-1 - welded steel tubes for pressure purposes, non-alloy.

EN 10255 - non-alloy steel tubes suitable for welding and threading.

ISO 65 - steel tubes for screw threading.

BS 1387 / DIN 2440 / DIN 2441 - regional welded steel tube standards.

GB/T 3091 - welded steel pipes for low-pressure fluid conveyance (galvanized ERW); GB/T 13793 - ERW steel pipes for mechanical use.

Dimensions and Tolerances

Size range: NPS 1/8 to 26 (DN6–DN650). ERW production is commonly NPS 1/8 to 24; larger sizes are available on request.

Wall thickness (schedule): SCH 10, 20, 30, 40 (STD), 60, 80 (XS), 100, 120, 140, 160, XXS.

Lengths: random (approx. 5–7 m) or cut to length.

Ends: plain end (PE), threaded & coupled (T&C), beveled end (BE), or grooved.

Surface: black (bare, uncoated) or hot-dipped zinc-coated (galvanized).

Diameter and wall-thickness tolerances follow ASTM A53 / ASME SA53. SA53 is a nominal (average) wall pipe specification; for pressure design use the specified schedule and the governing code.

Applications

SA53 Grade B ERW pipe is used where moderate strength and good weldability matter more than high-pressure transmission duty:

Pressure piping: low- to medium-pressure steam lines, compressed air systems, hydraulic lines, water and gas distribution.

Fire protection: fire sprinkler systems.

HVAC and plumbing: chilled-water and hot-water lines, general building plumbing.

Structural: handrails, guardrails, supports, scaffolding, fencing.

General service: conduit, non-critical process piping.

SA53 is not a long-distance transmission line pipe (use API 5L for pipelines), is not intended for cryogenic service, and for pressure use the allowable temperature follows the applicable code (typically up to about 425°C / 800°F).

Manufacturing Process (ERW, Type E)

Skelp / coil preparation - steel strip is edge-milled and cleaned.

Forming - the skelp is rolled into a round shape.

Welding - the edges are joined by electric resistance (typically high-frequency induction, HFI/ERW) without filler metal, forming a single straight longitudinal seam.

Sizing and straightening - the tube is sized to nominal diameter and straightened.

Weld conditioning - optional heat treatment of the weld zone or full-body normalizing, per order.

Hydrostatic test - each length is pressure-tested.

Finishing - supplied black (bare) or hot-dip galvanized; ends cut plain, threaded, beveled, or grooved.

Welding and Fabrication

Grade B ERW pipe is suitable for welding by SMAW, GMAW, and GTAW, and for forming operations such as coiling, bending, and flanging. Type E pipe may be furnished nonexpanded or cold-expanded at the manufacturer's option. When close coiling or cold bending is required, Grade A is preferred, but cold bending of Grade B is permitted.

FAQ

What is the difference between SA53 Grade B Type E and Type S?

Both are Grade B carbon steel under ASME SA53, but Type E is electric-resistance welded (ERW) from steel skelp, while Type S is seamless (hot-finished or cold-drawn). Type E is the form covered by this page.

Is ASME SA53 Grade B ERW the same as ASTM A53 Grade B ERW?

Yes. ASME SA53 is the boiler-and-pressure-vessel-code edition of ASTM A53. The material requirements, chemistry, and properties are identical; the ASME designation is used when the pipe is ordered for ASME BPVC or ASME B31 piping services.

Can SA53 Grade B ERW pipe be used as line pipe for oil and gas transmission?

No. SA53 is a general-purpose pressure and service pipe, not a long-distance transmission line pipe. Continuous pipeline service should use API 5L pipe. SA53 Grade B ERW is intended for pressure piping, steam, water, gas, and air lines, and for structural use.

What pressure can SA53 Grade B ERW pipe carry?

There is no single pressure rating. The working pressure depends on the pipe schedule (wall thickness), diameter, temperature, and the governing code (e.g., ASME B31.1). It must be calculated per the applicable design code, not read from the grade alone.

Is SA53 Grade B ERW pipe available galvanized?

Yes. SA53 covers both black (bare) and hot-dipped zinc-coated (galvanized) pipe. ERW Grade B can be supplied in either condition; galvanizing is applied after welding and hydrostatic testing.

What is the maximum service temperature for SA53 Grade B ERW pipe?

For pressure service the allowable temperature follows the applicable code (such as ASME B31.1) and is generally up to about 425°C (800°F). It is not intended for cryogenic service or for sustained high-temperature/pressure transmission duty.
