ASTM A513 standard specifies requirements for carbon and alloy electric resistance welded (ERW) mechanical tubing. The ASTM A513 standard classifies pipes into three categories based on manufacturing processes and characteristics: Category 1 (hot rolled resistance welded), Category 2 (cold rolled), and Category 5 (mandrel drawn).
Compared with structural pipe specifications, A513 Class 1 welded pipe has more specific requirements for outer diameter, wall thickness, length and straightness tolerances. It is further subdivided into two types: A513 Type 1A (hot rolled) and Type 1B (pickled and oiled).
A513 Type 1A mechanical pipe is produced from hot-rolled strip, while Type 1B pipe also uses hot-rolled strip as raw material, but is pickled to remove scale and oiled to provide a cleaner surface than hot-rolled. This treatment gives Type 1B pipe a smoother, cleaner surface, making it suitable for applications requiring higher surface quality.
When selecting ASTM A513 resistance welded pipe, specific application needs such as pressure, temperature, fluid type and material compatibility should be considered to ensure safe and reliable performance.
