What Are The Types of Casing Pipe Threads

In the oil and gas industry, casing threads are the critical connections that hold the entire wellbore together. These threads are broadly categorized into two groups: API Standard Connections and Premium Connections.

Don't risk a downhole failure. Request a joint integrity and tensile strength report for our LTC and BTC connections.

API Standard Connections

These are standardized by the American Petroleum Institute (API 5CT). They are cost-effective, widely available, and used in most conventional wells.

API Threads

STC (Short Threaded and Coupled)

Thread Profile: 8-round thread (8 threads per inch with rounded crests and roots).

Characteristics: Shorter thread engagement.

Best For: Shallow, low-pressure wells and surface casing where high tension isn't a concern.

Limitation: Lowest tensile strength; prone to "pull-out" under heavy loads.

LTC (Long Threaded and Coupled)

Thread Profile: 8-round thread (same as STC but longer).

Characteristics: More "teeth" engaged between the pipe and coupling.

Best For: Medium-depth wells. It provides better tensile strength than STC, making it the most common choice for standard production casing.

Limitation: Not gas-tight; relies on thread dope (sealant) to prevent leaks.

BTC (Buttress Threaded and Coupled)

Thread Profile: Trapezoidal (square-like) thread shape.

Characteristics: Excellent load-bearing capacity. The threads lock together to handle massive axial tension.

Best For: Deep wells, high-pressure environments, and heavy casing strings. The joint strength is nearly equal to the pipe body itself.

Limitation: While stronger than round threads, it is still generally not considered 100% gas-tight for high-pressure gas wells.

Premium Connections

Premium connections are proprietary designs developed by specific manufacturers (like Tenaris, Vallourec, or VAM®). They are used when API threads cannot handle extreme well conditions.

Metal-to-Metal Seal Connections

How it works: Unlike API threads that seal using grease (thread dope), premium threads have a machined metal shoulder that creates a physical seal.

Benefit: Provides 100% gas-tight integrity, which is essential for high-pressure gas wells.

Flush and Semi-Flush Connections

Design: These eliminate or reduce the "bulge" of the coupling, making the outside diameter (OD) of the connection almost the same as the pipe.

Best For: "Slim-hole" drilling where clearance between casing strings is very tight.

High-Torque Connections

Benefit: Specifically designed to be rotated during drilling.

Best For: Horizontal wells and extended-reach drilling where the pipe must endure high twisting forces.

Summary Comparison Table

LTC Round Moderate Thread Dope Medium-Depth Vertical Wells
BTC Trapezoidal High Thread Dope Deep Wells / High Tension

FAQ

What is a casing thread?

A casing thread is the screw-like mechanical connection at the ends of casing pipes used in oil and gas wells.

Its primary functions are:

Connection: It allows individual pipe joints (usually 30–40 feet long) to be screwed together to form a continuous "casing string" that can reach miles underground.

Load Support: It must support the massive weight of the entire pipe string hanging below it (tensile strength).

Sealing: It creates a leak-proof seal to prevent fluids (oil, gas, or water) from escaping into the surrounding environment.

What is the full form of BTC thread?

The full form of BTC thread is Buttress Threaded and Coupled.

It is an API-standard high-strength connection used for casing in the oil and gas industry, featuring a trapezoidal (square-like) thread shape designed to handle extreme tensile loads and heavy pipe strings.
