API 5CT L80-13Cr Casing Pipe
What is API 5CT L80-13Cr Casing Pipe?
API 5CT L80-13Cr is a high-performance, corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) casing pipe belonging to Group 2 of the API 5CT specification. It is a martensitic stainless steel containing approximately 12% to 14% Chromium.
Unlike standard L80-1 (carbon steel), L80-13Cr is specifically engineered for wells with high Carbon Dioxide ( CO2) concentrations. It provides excellent resistance to CO2 -induced pitting and general corrosion, significantly extending the lifespan of the well string in acidic environments where carbon steel would fail rapidly.

L80-13Cr casing Pipe Size Table (Common Sizes)
13Cr material is expensive, so it is often used for the production string (tubing) or the bottom section of a casing string.

L80-13Cr Oil well casing pipe Key Features
Excellent CO2 Resistance: Forms a passive Chromium Oxide layer that prevents mass-loss corrosion.
Strict Hardness Control: The 23 HRC limit ensures the pipe isn't too brittle.
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Allows for thinner walls than J55/K55 while maintaining 80ksi strength.
Premium Threading Compatibility: Often paired with Premium Connections (Gas-Tight) because 13Cr is frequently used for high-pressure gas production.
L80-13Cr OCTG Casing Pipe Application
L80-13Cr is the industry standard for:
CO2 Rich Wells: Where CO2 partial pressure exceeds 30 psi.
Wet Gas Wells: Where moisture and CO2 form carbonic acid.
Offshore & Deepwater Wells: Where the cost of intervention is extremely high, requiring long-term material durability.
Geothermal Wells: Environments with high temperature and corrosive brine.
Note: It is NOT suitable for high H2S (sour) environments or high-chloride environments at very high temperatures, as it may suffer from Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC).
Inspection Requirements
Due to the critical nature of CRA materials, inspection is comprehensive:
Hardness Testing: 100% verification to ensure no spot exceeds 23 HRC.
Ultrasonic Testing (UT): Full-body inspection to detect internal inclusions or longitudinal/transverse defects.
Electromagnetic Inspection (EMI): To detect surface and near-surface imperfections.
Hydrostatic Test: Every joint is tested to pressures often exceeding 7,000+ psi to ensure seal integrity.
Visual Inspection: Specifically looking for surface "scratches" or "galling," as 13Cr is more prone to surface damage than carbon steel.
Drift Test: Using a 13Cr-compatible mandrel to ensure the internal clearance is unobstructed.

FAQ
What are the different types of L80?
Under the API 5CT specification, there are three main types of L80 grade casing and tubing, distinguished by their chemical composition and corrosion resistance:
L80-1 (Standard Carbon Steel):
Material: Low-alloy carbon steel.
Purpose: Specifically designed for Sour Service ( H2S ). It has a controlled maximum hardness (≤23 HRC) to prevent Sulfide Stress Cracking.
L80-9Cr (9% Chromium):
Material: Alloy steel with 9% Chromium and 1% Molybdenum.
Purpose: Provides better corrosion resistance than L80-1. It is used in wells with moderate CO2 and high temperatures where standard carbon steel would fail.
L80-13Cr (13% Chromium):
Material: Martensitic Stainless Steel (13% Chromium).
Purpose: The "Industry Standard" for High CO2 environments. It offers excellent resistance to pitting and weight-loss corrosion in sweet gas wells but is expensive.
What is the difference between K55 and L80?
The main differences between K55 and L80 are strength, hardness, and the environments they are designed for:
Strength:
L80 is much stronger, with a minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi.
K55 is a lower-grade material with a minimum yield strength of 55,000 psi.
Sour Service (H2S Resistance):
L80 is a "controlled hardness" grade specifically designed for Sour Service (H2S environments).
K55 is for "Sweet Service" only and will fail (crack) quickly if exposed to H2S.
Hardness Control:
L80 has a strict maximum hardness limit of 23 HRC to prevent brittle cracking.
K55 has no mandatory API hardness limit.
Heat Treatment:
L80 must be Quenched and Tempered (Q&T) to achieve its properties.
K55 can be delivered "as-rolled" or normalized, requiring less processing.
